Some of the information I gave out last week needs updated. The title
was changed from "Rising Sun" to "Oh Mercy", with September 19th as its
release date. Several of the song titles were also changed slightly.
The album was produced by Daniel Lanois, known for his work with Eno.
Several more observations:
1) One person I know pointed out that the general feel of most of the
songs is close to that of "Blind Willie McTell". Perhaps Bob got sick
of people constantly asking him why he didn't release that magnificent
Infidels outtake, and he decided that if we liked it THAT much he'd
give us a whole album of it :-).
2) Another person thought that "Everything Is Broken" has a kind of
early Creedence sound that would appeal to the kids.
3) The outside artist/LP that this reminds ME of is John Lennon/Plastic
Ono Band (The one that starts out with "Mother"). Not that the moods
of the album are the same, but the "no-frills" type of feel is
similar. The bass playing on the LP also reminds me of Fernando
Saunders' work on Lou Reed's "Blue Mask"-era stuff.
