Two suspicious characters inserted near the end of "Things Have Changed."
For reasons unexplained I'm haunted by this line, and I've rarely cared
about the humorous & probably meaningless names Dylan has chosen in the
past. Dare I say that things have . . . .
Any insights or comments?

My original thought was that they were dogs' names - but someone
posted that Dylan has cats called 'Miss Lucy' and 'Mr Jinx'. I
don't know if they were kidding or not.

Has the possibility of them being characters from the film been ruled
out?

So it's not just people that have gone crazy but animals too! Still, I
don't think cats & dogs are killing themselves yet. Maybe there's nothing
to these names, or maybe everything. I'm not that eager to dismiss them as
a joke.

Doesn't "go jump in the lake" mean something like "go !@#$
yourself"?

Yes.

Mr. Jinx & Miss Lucy are purposely abstract names that don't refer to
anyone specific. Their context requires it.

"I'm in love with a woman that don't even appeal to me
Mr. Jinx and Miss Lucy they jumped in a lake
I'm not that eager to make a mistake"

The previous verse has him saying, "Feel like fallin' in love with the
first woman I meet"

Now he's in a contradictory love affair, but he isn't going to do
anything drastic about it, like a jinxed man and his gal, he's not going
to jump into the lake like they did in "Froggie Went a Courting"

Miss Lucy is just a woman's name, like Mona or Ophelia

Dylan can even write last names and keep the characters totally anonymous

"Wanted man by Lucy Watson, wanted man by Jeannie Brown,
Wanted man by Nellie Johnson, wanted man in this next town."

Miss Lucy is a Persian cat named after Dylan's close friend Lucille Ball. Mr.
Jinx is a Manx that Raquel Welch gave him who is very clumsy (the cat is clumsy
too).
