Bob Dylan and I wish our mothers were still alive. It would have made
Mothers Day more meaningful.

Thinking back on my mother's musical taste, I realize I never thought of
her too much as a young woman. She was a Leadbelly fan, and had stashed
a lot of Leadbelly cds in the basement. When my friends and I used them
to smash at a record roll, she got quite bitter, even after my father
explained we had no way of playing 78s anymore. I later bought her a
Leadbelly album and Leadbelly cds but she never played them.

She was also a big Belafonte fan, and thoroughly enjoyed playing
Belafonte albums later in her life.

Once my brother and I started bring music home, she became a rock n roll
critic. She thought the Everly Brothers sounded like cats, as if that
were a bad thing. However, I remember her tuning in the country stations
for a while when we went on road trips.

She sang along to my Johnny Cash album, even when her best friend
thought Johnny sounded terrible.

Once, she accused me of playing a Fats Domino album at 45.

Bob Dylan was never a favorite of hers, despite me playing Blonde on
Blonde a lot. I remember my dad complaining about Phil Ochs terrible
voice, but that's a different story.

And after I moved out, she said she missed all the music I used to play.

So that's my mother's musical tastes. Your turn, poisoned rose.

My mother bought "Sixty Minute Man" by the Dominoes when it was a
current hit in 1951 (she was 16), but in general she likes show tunes,
traditional pop, and some 50s and 60s rock and roll. Dionne Warwick
was a favorite. She likes Elton John and some other later rock acts. I
doubt that she could name one song by Dylan. My father never heard of
him until he did the Hurricae benefit in like 1976. He was only
interested because he heard that Bob was Jewish. He asked me, who's
this By Die-Lan guy?

Of course, poisoned rose, baiting you is much more fun than talking
about Bob Dylan.

But surely you could share with us an anecdote about your mother and
music. C'mon, don't be shy.

Sometimes his mother lets him use the big stereo.

I have been giggling about this joke all day.

If pr won't come clean about his mother's musical taste, surely someone
else can add something.

Come on, he won't even come clean about his own musical taste.

Once PR was rating an album using his brilliant 20 point system
butafter several hours he still couldn't decide if it was 15/20 or
16/20 so he secretly made it 31/40 and never told anybody.

My mother liked This Little Piggy Went To Market. Happy Birthday was
a big favorite, especially around birthday time.

Jo Stafford led the charts with You Belong To Me the day I was born.
Hearing it on the radio gave my mother her anthem from that day
forward. After we got our Victrola, she enjoyed playing and singing
along with all kinds of show music to her children.

But she was always an Ink Spots, Harry Belafonte and Perry Como fan.
And of course, she loved the gezelligse of the classics on Sundays
with the family for which my father cobbled together an early stereo,
building the amps and receiver (and turntable and speaker cabinets)
from kits. Most of all, she enjoyed long family Sunday drives to the
country listening to WQXR coming home with fresh produce and a car
full of sleeping kids.

What could be more funny than a 55 year old guy living with his
mother?
