okay, so you may think this is stupid. talking about FOOD.

but diet and exercise are literally the two MOST IMPORTANT THINGS in a person's LIFE.

your body is your temple, as mr. dylan tells us.
'
look, all these green drinks.

they are a tiny step in the right direction, maybe a good first step, but we MUST go further.

it's what i do when i am LAZY at home, for myself. my own green drink, to get my dark leafy vegetables; a seaweed from the ocean. (god i worry about plastic and radiation (and mercury?), is this a all a myth, or for real, or what?)

anyway, as many if not all of you know, i make a glass with the green spirulina powder, stevia (safe plant sweetener, brand KAL my favorite kind, available online as well as in some stores), lemon juice, and chilled water. if you're even "lazier," you can take a spirulina powder pill as part of your daily regimen. the company i use from whole foods offers both varieties, and even more than one source for the seaweed product. i think mine's from hawaii, i'm not sure. i'd have to check. i think i tried the one from california, and it tasted awful, i may have it reversed. i'm not sure. i don't think so. well, anyway, i am assuming that nutritionally they are equal, but i really don't know. they look about the same.

but this is the easy way out. well, it's a toss up. some people may prefer to grab a green drink daily on the go, while out, at work, as a thirst quencher, after the gym, and enjoy it, but it's mostly fruit juice. some may not want so much fruit and/or calories in that form. some may prefer to eat fruit whole (which in fact is way more nutritious!). others may have digestive issues; still others may prefer the pill, or to make their own drink like i do with lemon juice or whatnot.

btw, sure, the small sheets of seaweed in those little wrapped packages are great, but are you seriously going to eat a whole pack *every day*? once in a while certainly isn't good enough. or miso soup? every day? well, if you do, more power to you. this is for the rest of us.

spirulina lemonade is not the *most* delicious yummy thing on earth, but it's certainly tolerable, and a good way to quickly shove even just a touch of those precious greens into my system, and get it over with. or you could take a pill.

that's what most of these cold drinks are doing. spirulina. dropping in the dark green leafy vegetable from the ocean, one of our superfoods for health, to ward off the cancers.

but where is the kale??? where is the spinach???

the popular drink products currently available are pitiful.

only the juice company "naked," i have found, even STARTS to come close.

naked kale. "kale blazer," they call it. and it is NOT widely available. once i saw a huge billboard for it, on a huge intersection in west la, and i got excited, that things were heading in the right direction, but nary a store in sight could be found carrying that particular "flavor." all the stores or stands i checked in with, with a selection of health food drinks, say naked or odwalla or whatever, almost *nobody* had the kale. of the many places i checked (not everywhere, of course), only one store, and one market had it. it has both spinach and kale, which is a good start, but it's not enough. they are way way down at the end of the ingredient list, after all the fruit.

naked offers one other green option, not nearly as healthy, i think something called green machine (?), with a just a touch of spinach and a little spirulina.

how about adding lots and lots of spinach and kale? and fiddle in the labs with recipes, combinations, to come up with something, okay, not guzzle-ably delicious, but tolerable. actually, i don't even believe in what i wrote. i think i already almost know. honestly, i think simple is better. it really shouldn't be that complicated, at all. it doesn't have to taste THAT bad.

you know, like the way coke or speed STINGS going up your nose, and everyone digs it.

or the needle and the damage done. (okay, that sickens me, but whatever).

but i mean, hell, V-8 juice ain't no cup of meat, and lots of people drink it. why? not because it tastes so great, but because they know it's good for you, and they are trying to be good. making an effort. to get their vegetables.

kudos to effective marketing. easy peasy. nutrition in a glass. i could have had a V-8! it's even now widely available at convenience stores like 7-11, i believe, and food mini-marts, in the drink sections. cans of v-8. great!

now we need spinach and kale. nothing could be more serious. i saw a whole program about how doctors were growing all the health food i used to eat, and were and are feeding it to a whole host of sick people, with everything from cancer, to heart attacks and strokes, to diabetes and high cholesterol and blood pressure, etc... all the dark greens, all the wide variety of fruits and other vegetables, all containing essential nutrients for the body, all the beans and legumes and grains (like quinoa) and nuts and seeds and healthy oils... and merely through following my healthy diet of yore....HALF OF THEM WERE CURED OF THEIR DISEASES AND ILLNESSES.

and we need all of it. all of the leaf. not juiced. not pressed. like that company, pressed juice. well, that's a nice tasty treat, but it's certainly not terribly beneficial for health. nobody should be under the mistaken delusion (is that repetitive?) that a glass of juice (pressed) is equal to a piece of fruit. like an orange? omg, the white stuff is the best part, packed with nutrients. (yes, i confess, i like my orange juice with no pulp. i consider the whole thing a treat, anyway, it's mostly sugar.) (actually, you know, smoky used to make us eat a whole orange at breakfast every morning. he said no other form of vitamin C could equal the nutrition in that.) well, anyway, this is another issue, and not the most (pardon the pun) pressing one at hand.

keith gubitz, jesse dylan's friend, pointed this out to me, about juicing, when my trainer told me to get a juicer for my vegetables, and i did. what are you doing?!?!?!? he queried in complete disbelief and with the ultimate perturbation, as if i were congenitally insane. look at all that beautiful pulp. all that nutrition! all those vitamins and minerals! all that fiber! you're an idiot!

and he was right. so i got the vitamix high-powered blender he recommended, probably way more powerful than i really need, but i appreciate it, actually, come to think of it, i think i did make cream of broccoli soup with it once. well, that's neither here not there. you just need a decent blender, it doesn't have to be that expensive. anyway, and ultimately, i boiled my concoction down to the simplest recipe on earth, for many reasons which i believe i have already enumerated in this group in the past, and are not necessary to repeat here again.

one fuji apple, my favorite as far as i know from the selection at the stores, i like sweet, tons of my favorite spinach from trader joe's which doesn't take like dirt, like some of the fancy ones i have tried from higher-end markets, available in a big plastic box and costs more, makes me want to throw up, and somewhat less kale, because it's not as tasty, also from a pre-washed bag. i know my mom says, always better to buy it closest to its natural state, and then wash it yourself, but, well, i kind of trust it...i think its okay...its certainly easier...i guess the ultimate thing to do would be to buy vegetables at the highly acclaimed santa monica farmer's market, but this trader joe's spinach sure tastes fine to me. ?

anyway, back to my smoothie.

it was thick, and green, and goopy.

some people call it monkey juice.

best thing on earth.

the elixir of life.

eaten with a spoon.

now we have to find a way to make that available to the public, in a more palatable (more fruit), convenient form. (fruit as juice, not so thick, to drink). this is not rocket science.

and i need help.

i'm too lazy. i want it pre-prepared, fast, and convenient. and i'm certain that tens of millions of people could benefit from this as well. if not more.

V-8 is great, but is it the best? is it the most powerful? is it the healthiest?

no.

we need dark green.

don't get me wrong. red is a good color. it's pure nutrition. it has its benefits. so does carrot juice. variety is good. all good. yes, juice is not the best option. not as good pure whole fresh vegetables, but WAY BETTER THAN NOTHING.

V-8 is THICK, and DARK, and GOOPY, but it's red. red is important. but green governs all.

it should be available in a supermarket, and on the snack shelves in the refrigerated section.

in the same way V-8 is not exactly cocaine or candy or cherry ice cream, and it still sells, neither does this green goop have to be the world's tastiest treat.

in the same way crazy lazy disturbed lost souls love the sting of cocaine or meth going up their noses, cuz they know what it will do for them, people facing the looming consequences of their lavish laissez-faire lifestyles will remember to at least come on and try a little, and drink their V-8.

it's not sunkist or mountain dew or apple juice, but it's there on the shelves, and it sells. why? people drink it because they know it's good for them, they feel they need to make some kind of effort to be healthy, so they drink V-8.

now people are getting their spirulina.

just IMAGINE how much healthier we'd all be, if we had a true green equivalent of V-8 as a selection in the drink refrigerators.

SPINACH and KALE. i choose these two as the tastiest, compared to collard or mustard, etc...although, who knows, maybe a collard drink could or would become popular in the south? think of the marketing possibilities!!!!

people need to understand how good it is for them.

me, i go overboard. i'm too extreme. it could be seriously tasty, compared to the way i prepare it, the ratio of fruit to a cornucopia of green (is that possibly a mixed metaphor?). well, anyway.

btw, they could put spirulina in it as well.

apple juice (in this case pressed so the whole thing isn't too thick in order to drink), puréed spinach, puréed kale, and spirulina powder. (MAYBE ONE more pressed fruit juice for taste as well, not sure what...)

in little bottles, prepared daily, sent out to the stores and snack/refreshment stands, mini-marts, etc...with appropriate expiration dates.

like some kind of POPEYE drink.

wow, it makes me so sad to think of how things are now, and how they could be.

how unhealthy everything is, compared to how healthy it all could be.

i got sad, cuz i was thinking of all the cool ways to market it to people.

like with popeye the sailor man with his muscle and anchor tattoo on the bottle, pouring the spinach down his throat. but we have to get rid of the pipe, unless i suppose it were a marijuana pipe. oh g-d, i seriously don't like that stuff, but maybe i'm just different, i have no problems with marijuana of the olden days, or at least i should say, my reaction. that was great stuff!

so anyway.

all this to say, we need to stock monkey juice or popeye pulp or whatever you want to call it, on the shelves. where the naked and odwalla stuff is. i even think they put carrot juice there, too.

every day.

for the laziest people on earth, who want to "try." to make an "effort." to be healthy.

lazy people could daily force themselves to drink their carrot juice (btw, is this pressed??? shouldn't it be puréed, and then say add a little juice so it's not quite so thick!??!?!? i don't know what flavor...), V-8 juice, and POPEYE PULP.

alls i'm saying is, someone should make popeye pulp.

spirulina is a start. (the single serving green drinks for sale popping up in the refrigerators amongst the rest of the fruit juices and maybe carrot, supplied by numerous health food companies)

a green V-8 is what we need.

and remember, it has to be fresh, so i mean, this is for lazy people who would buy it daily on the go, or whatever. who knows, maybe even one day for city dwellers, the delivery stores would carry it, too. can you imagine being able to get it from say, PINK DOT?

it's not that great at all to have a big container of it in the fridge. it doesn't change color, but it loses its vitality sitting around. maybe you could sell six-packs at the market, to be consumed daily, similar to the way bio-k is sold and intended to be consumed, but not such a large package/huge quantity. but i see how quickly the fresh fruit and carrot juices expire, this should be the same way, if not even less. i heard on a commercial that when you bring your vegetables home (i forget the vegetable given as an example in the commercial), after it sits in your fridge for a WEEK, it loses HALF of its vitamins and minerals.

so don't forget that, either.

oh well. i'm done. i feel like a big fat baby. take care of me! make me a drink! do it for me! waah!

Hi Rachel. Glad you are on the case for food. I am a Naked lover too. You probably figured that for people who know better, co-ops are the best source of healthy food. But how about the rest of us?

You may want to check out The China Study by T. Colin Campbell and his son, Thomas. Eye-opening book. Also the latest from Eric Holt-Gimenez, Foodies Guide... to get a better handle on why all our "whys" are "nots."

Anyhow, how's Keith doing? I haven't heard from him in years!

Hey Just K. 🌞

Thanks for your note. I'm not likely to do any reading like that, but perhaps you could give me the headline(s)? It's not that I'm not interested. I prefer conversation. Sorry if that's a drag...

I'm not quite sure what you mean by that, why our whys are nots? Btw, that sounds Jewish, ha ha. (do NOT do unto others... :-) )

Me neither, man. (heard from keith). He's moody, like lots of us. Sometimes he just withdraws for long periods of time. I'm usually the one who has to reach out to him, and well, tbh, I haven't in perhaps too long. I feel badly because sometimes he needs help, and I don't really have any to offer.

I hope he's okay. I'm glad he has Sonia. I hope they are still friends.

I know he's really active online, always posting lots of videos, and doing social media.

Perhaps you could look around for him? I also still have his email, if you need it.

Best,
R.

Hi Rachel, its Just W. not Just K. But that's OK; we know who we are.

Those books just talk about why our food system (and how it is connected with feeding business to our health system) is the way it is. Not to make you depressed, but to make us all more aware so that we don't thrash about trying to find answers to problems which have been made intractable on purpose, you know, like anguishing over something because it's not more logical. That's what I meant when I said it tells why your "whys" will always be "nots," as long as there is money involved.

Anyhow, I haven't even seen Keith post anything for quite some time, at least not on any of the sites I frequent, which does not include fbook. I think the last time I spoke with him was in 2009 and the last email I got from him was sometime in 2014 or so. In the meantime, be well, stay strong and may '18 bring you lots of life!

K for Ken,IF that's ok w/you! ? Also quite the versatile poet in another group? ? (actually, iirc, i think you've posted some poems here, too! ?) well, anyway...

I'm glad you (plural) know who you are, but I'm not always certain. Some things don't seem to add up/or make sense. I'm not good at dealing with fibs or incontestable lies or ploys, or shady users.

people running around naked on the computer...i don't know how they get the balls to do that, and i start to get confused who is who!

i mean, i guess i do it, let the horse out of the stable, reminds me of josh from the aaron sorkin tv show the west wing, the experts saying he (josh) wasn't fully conscious yelling at the president...cuz when it gets spat back at me, seeing myself in the mirror, i'm frozen in shock. it's horrendous!

but i can't seem to stop, because when i do it, it's such a (word choice?) high/thrill/joy/some fun/release/freedom/sense of wholeness, integrity, honesty, quest for dignity, cleaning out my conscience, letting the world (whomever is there) know who i am. the crazy thing is, when other people do it...it kind of seems unnecessary. it often doesn't change my opinion of them. i guess it's just a personal thing. to know that people know who you really are, and still like you, anyway. fessing up all your dirty secrets and whatnot.

it's a good feeling. :-)

it's a GREAT feeling!

i don't quite follow what you are trying to explain to me about the whys and the nots and money and what this has to do with food, i'm certain i don't know.

well, never mind. it doesn't sound like something tantalizing my thirst to know.

be cool! (or i suppose i should say stay warm, out there in the freezing midwest!!!)
