Did you see Dylan in 1988-89? GE Smith was phenomenal. He's also a
very nice guy.
yea i did. a number of times. and i hated that band. he may be a nice
guy but his face irritates my bowels. Ive seen him walking down the
street too. I was disturbed.
How could you?
They were superb!
What did they ever do to you?
That's funny, because I was just thinking about Dylan's guitar players
this afternoon, and Mick Taylor is my favorite by far. Not necessarily
for what he did *with* Dylan, though. (I thought about it while I was
listening to a Rolling Stones show from 1972.)
That 1984 tour was OK, but sort of one of those in-between,
place-holding tours without anything particularly memorable _ except for
that major rewrite of Tangled Up in Blue, which I love.

Absolutely - I love Mick Taylor with the Stones, his stamp is all over
their best albums ('69-73), but his playing on that tour was atrocious.
He looks miserable too. Listen to him 'playing' Every Grain Of Sand
it's awful. Taking into account Live Aid and BD's guest spot on The
Stones' 1998 tour, I think perhaps Bob should avoid performances with
any Rolling Stone ever again. Oh, and I heartily agree about the TUIB
rewrite - it's absolutely wonderful.

I liked him too, but just for sheer technical ability he's got to be in the
list since he's up against such top competition. I'm surprised not to see
Billy Cross on these lists though.

Good point! I'd forgotten about your No. 1; I guess I'd sort of
blocked it from my memory.

Well, I wouldn't swap those performances on Hard Rain for almost
anything. Maybe that is shit guitar playing, who knows, but they are
pure magic.
I don't quite understand...you want him to chew on your big ass?
I think you want a different kind of newsgroup!
Because the sound of the Grateful Dead backing Dylan in 1987
(particularly the guitar) is atrocious.

So all professional musicians are fabulous, right?
Some of his doodling is quite cool, so long as the other instruments are
doing more, but I seem to remember a hell of a lot of Larry Campbell and
John Jackson just strumming along while Bob played two notes for five
minutes over and over and over and over and over and over again.

I love the way he doodles that "I Want You" introduction over and over
and over and over and over in the "Unplugged" rehearsals. No pain no
gain!
All musicians playing with Dylan are an extension of him. Any criticism
of a musician is a criticism of Dylan. If he chooses to have a
maverick like Freddy K in his band it is because he wants a spanner in
the works.
Mr Jinx
Really Tony, nobody in here is willing to do that for you.
Try over at mydisgrace.space.com.
Actually it's GayFord - do you never read art magazines? Some kids at
my school used to make the same mistake, but then they were about 12
years old too.

I loved 50% of what Freddy did, and hated the other half.
Consequently, he's on the worst list. His bad half was bad enough to
warrant it. I was attempting to raise some debate on the quality of
these musicians. Dylan seems to have brought out the best in a lot of
them, and some pretty dire stuff in some others. That's nobody's
fault, it's just the way it is. I repeat that Mick Taylor, great
guitarist that he is, was not good with Dylan - therefore he's on the
list. The point of the thread was specfically in relation to these
guy's work with Bob. Perhaps everyone's forgotten just how
inappropriate the sound he produced was for that tour. Everyone else
in the band was great. The fact is that during the NET, the quality of
playing has been extremally variable. To say that is irrelevant
because everything stems from Bob and Bob is all powerful so mortals
should not judge him is not realistic in my view. The guitarist on
Letterman '84 could have been on the best list by the way.
