I'm kind of surprised that nobody has mentioned this (unless I just
missed it), but the Aug 25 issue of _Goldmine_ was dedicated almost
entirely to Dylan. There were several articles, a detailed discography
and price guide, a descriptive bibliography of Dylan-related books, an
annotated discography of foreign pressings, and an informative guide to
Dylan CD recordings (including appraisals of sound quality and some
interesting discussion of production details). This issue should still
be available at some newsstands (i.e., the ones that don't display the
current issue until its cover date is reached).

Bad news: only release dates appear in the discography; there is no
information about recording dates. More bad news: nary a whisper
about bootlegs, a topic of no little interest to collectors. I'm not
sure why bootlegs weren't covered; GM routinely flouts its "no bootleg"
policy by reviewing bootleg albums and by accepting advertising (not
always discreet) for bootleg items. I haven't seen Cable's book (on
Dylan boots), but according to the GM bibliography the most recent
edition was 1980, so there is a clear need for an up-to-date accounting.

Lamenting the absence of boot info in the Dylan _Goldmine_ issue, I wrote:

Shortly after posting, I was perusing the back pages of the very same
issue and noticed the following ad:

TO LIVE OUTSIDE THE LAW:
A GUIDE TO BOB DYLAN
BOOTLEGS

A complete discography of all Dylan
bootleg LPs, EPs and CDs, illustrated
with over 100 sleeves, complete track
listings, year of release, country
of origin and source of recordings.
Cost: $20.

The ad goes on to give the seller's name and address, which I omit
because I feel squeamish about giving this guy free worldwide publicity.
I'm curious to know if anyone has seen this discography, which sounds
homemade to me. I'm trying to decide if it's worth risking the $20.

Right, Cable is badly out of date as a source of information about
available records. It's still a fairly good reference for listings of
the original sources of this material, though a number of things have
come to light since 1980 (the most spectacular being the new Basement
Tapes). Still, for listings of the 'classic' tapes that made up the
older bootlegs (culminating in Ten of Swords) -- the Minnesota Hotel
Room tape, the East Orange tape, the Gaslight tapes, the Witmark
demos, the Hawks session, the offical lp outtakes and deletions, etc
etc -- it's a very handy reference. And the older bootleg records, the
ones Cable mentions by name, do occasionally turn up even now. Just
last weekend I saw "GWW John Birch Society Blues" and the old TMQ
"Live at Newport '65". Send email if you want further information
about this book. I don't know for sure that it's still in print, but I
just bought my copy a month ago, so it seems likely that it is.

[note: I also saw yet another Ten of Swords tape set, on six
cassettes, which leads me to think that it's fairly readily available
in this form; keep your eyes open]

Missing is the recent CD releases of Bob Dylan, Self Portrait, PG&BK,
and New Morning. It is amazing how much effort Columbia has been putting
forth to get his older albums on CD recently. Anybody care to predict the
fates of the remaining holdouts- Saved, Shot of Love, and Dylan?

Also, I still haven't been able to figure out which Blonde on Blonde release
I have- does anybody know the original running times for the two shortened cuts?

I picked up the Self Portrait CD release yesterday- one disk, 74'15" worth.
Everything seems complete, except In the Days of 49 was cut from 5'42" to
5'27".

As an added bonus, you can cut out the painting on the front of the box
and hang it on your wall.

I read somewhere (CD Review I think) that the third pressing of Blonde
on Blonde, which has the original running times, has a '2' in the clear
plastic portion in the center rim of the disk.
