I loved the singing of Peggy Lee, who just died at the age of 81. Her
peak was before my time, but I remember her radio hits of "I'm a Woman"
and "Is That All There Is?" two famous Lieber and Stoller songs. I
worked backwards, buying some of her cds of the 50's and 40's,
discovering some of her qualities that made her the "greatest white
female
singer of the 20th century and the female equivalent of Frank
Sinatra,"according to Observer jazz critic Dave Gelly. He goes on to
describe Peggy Lee:

She had a "very simple, low key" style in which
her immaculate timing was key.

"She could really just hit it in that way that
really good jazz singers can," he said.

"She didn't do it by changing the songs,
she didn't alter the tune, she didn't skat.

"She just stood up and sang the song, lifted it
a few inches off the ground and off she
went. Beautiful, just gorgeous."

That's not the way Bob Dylan sings. I wonder if Dylan liked Peggy Lee
much? She certainly was too old for him. I wonder what she thought of
Dylan?

Bob did a great version of Fever in the 1980 shows.

Then Bob must've been too old for his last wife. The age differential was
the same.

One of my long-time favourites! And I remember how happy my wife and I
were when I came home clutching the long-sought after Japanese CD
pressing of Latin ala Lee -- you just gotta have heart!

Fever
John Davenport / Eddie Cooley

Am
Never know how much I love you

Never know how much I care

When you put your arms around me
E7 Am
I get a fever that's so hard to bear

Refrein:
Am
You give me fever when you kiss me
F6 Am
Fever when you hold me tight

Fever in the morning
E7 Am
Fever all through the night

Sun lights up the daytime
Moon lights up the night
I light up when you call my name
And you know I'm gonna treat you right

(Na refrein)
Am
Ev'rybody's got the fever

That's something you all know

Fever isn't such a new thing
E7 Am
Fever started long ago

Romeo loved Juliet
Juliet she felt the same
When he put his arms around her, he said
Julie baby, you're my flame

Refrein:
Thou givest fever, when we kisseth
Fever with my flaming youth
Fever - I'm afire
Fever, yea I burn forsooth

Captain Smith and Pocahantas
Had a very mad affair
When her Daddy tried to kill him, she said
Daddy, o don't you dare

Refrein:
Give me fever, with his kisses
Fever when he holds me tight
Fever - I'm his Missus
Oh Daddy, won't you treat him right

Now you've listened to my story
Here's the point that I've made
Chicks were born to give you fever
Be it fahrenheit or centigrade

Refrein:
They give you fever, when you kiss them
Fever if you live and learn
Fever - till you sizzle
What a lovely way to burn

Although I was always a big Peggy Lee fan, it's still a shame that people
have overlooked the fact that her version of "Fever" is a note-by-note copy
of the definitive version recorded by the oh-so-underrated Little Willie
John.

YES!!! I grew up listening to her...even her late grammy in early 90's
I bought right away!! (ran out like it was BOB!) I mean in many ways
she is like BOB...had great sense of humor to her style of musical
presentaion LIFE..her/his sense of romanticism /realism.

and romanticism abounds!!

I have to say Peggy lee is one of my favorite singers and I listen to
her on and off every year of my life!!!

She remained very vital into late years..and like Bob her voice took
on a certain quality...SONGBOOK is worth owning...a mellow wine of
experience rendered artistically...no wonder the Gram...check it out!

love the muse

WELL she did change arrangements on many songs...Look at FEVER.

she made it her song man..and to this day it is my favorite version
yet...(i love little willie John)..BUT...she made it HERS and it was
COOL!!low key sensual..yet edgy..the finger snaps lone drum
beats...Vocal timing..perfect rendition!

love the muse

IIRC she added the Pocahontas verse to the song. I don't have the
original here, could someone else verify it?
