A long time ago (and I don't remember when or how) I heard of a great
party, in which came everybody came as as characters from Dylan songs. My
favorite was the man with newsprint pinned to his black shirt who was The
Preacher with Twenty Pounds of Headlines Stapled to His Chest.

Has anyone else heard of such a party? Who would you come as?

As for me, my favorite costume idea is to be Einstien Disguised as Robin Hood,
but I haven't found an occasion (yet) worthy of shaving my beard for the
cause....

ps The cross-posting to gdead is because I think of this idea everytime
the Dead do Desolation Row, and because one of the best parts of being
a deadhead is knowing to get dressed up.

The party in which people come dressed up as Dylan's characters is
described, I think, in Michael Gray's wonderful, albeit literary
(Sebastian, you'd like this) book, SONG & DANCE MAN: THE ART OF BOB
DYLAN. Gray says he can't imagine a greater tribute to an artist
than a room filled with people dressed as the characters he's created.
The one character I remember him describing most was Maggie's Brother,
who went around the room handing out nickels and dimes and asking
everyone if they were having a good time.

I read about such a party in the booklet accompanying _Biograph_, on
the first page. Some of the characters were Maggie's brother, Louie
the King, a Diplomat who carried on his shoulder a Siamese cat, Einstein
disguised as Robin Hood, the Queen of Spades, Napoleon in Rags, Mr.
Tambourine Man, and the abovementioned Preacher.

Maybe I'd go as the sword swallower, clicking my high heels, etc. But
that might be dangerous. Maybe I'd walk around with a picture of Bob,
stabbing it with a Bowie knife, and when Dylan's name came up, I'd ....
well, you know.
