Well how patronising of me! Basically her story is that Bob came out and
played a bunch of unknown songs and played with a band and it was unholy
racket and nobody could hear a thing, and then the show was over, and this
is the part she recounts in detail.
Everybody was filing out of the arena when he appears back on stage,
everyone hurries back, and, get this, he plays Blowin In The Wind!
Now surely not you say, well so did I, but I pressed her on it once and she
admitted it might not have been Blowin In The Wind but it was some favourite
and she remembered it was like a concession to the fans, as if he was being
very nice in playing that after plainly disapointing the crowd.
So what could it be? I pretty much dismissed the story but for some reason
it's taken me this long to realise: he played Like A Rolling Stone as an
encore. It was at the top of the pop charts barely 6 months prior so my mum,
who wasn't a big Dylan fan, would surely remember that it was a 'fan
favourite'. Furthermore, every other time Dylan played Positively 4th Street
on the 65 and 66 tours, he did an encore of Like A Rolling Stone; and even
more proof? On the tape, Bob says thank you to the crowd after Positively
4th Street, the crowd applauds, then the applause dies down, and then they
all start applauding again shortly after, then the tape cuts.
Seems clear to me that our tapes of Sydney 66 are incomplete, and that Bob
almost certainly played Like A Rolling Stone as an encore, and that I should
probably respect my mothers intelligence a bit more!

Great lesson, Dave. As you probably know Bob opened the Australian leg
in Sydney on April 13,1966 then played Brisbane the 15th, went back to
Sydney on the 16th, then on to Melbourne the 19th and 20th, and
Adelaide the 22nd and closed the Australian '66 tour in Perth on the
23rd. Unfortunately a complete set list only exists for the opening
Sydney show on the 13th and he definitely ended that show with
Positively 4th Street right after Ballad Of A Thin Man. This is a
departure because just about every other show on the '66 tour around
the world ended with Like A Rolling Stone after Ballad Of A Thin Man. I
have a partial setlist for the Melbourne Apr 20 show down to the 10th
song but that's it. The rest of the Australian shows.....nada
Okay, but why do you say definitely ended with Positively 4th Street? I mean
we have the tape and it cuts out after Positively 4th Street, but in my
opinion the tape is incomplete. On the tape you hear him say thanks, get
applause, crowd dies down, then they start applauding again, then the tape
ends. Surely that second applause is for him walking back on stage.
Plus I have a very reliable eye witness that says specifically that he
played an encore. I'm standing by my mum.

Yea, could very well be, Dave. I wasn't there. But every bootleg
recording of that show (and there are about 5 or 6) ends after Pos 4th
St. Maybe he just came back out for another bow. I dunno. It's another
mystery of Bob's career....
Maybe the boot ends there, but the tape ends with the 2nd applause burst
fading into *extended* silence and a lone voice crying "more!". The
recordist was in no rush to shut down.
My version ends with the applause dying down and then some brief silence, as
if they were just waiting for him to start whatever song he was going to do.
I mean applause for the return of the singer doesn't usually go on right up
until he starts the song.
Dave
Ah there's more than one tape eh, well that's a bugger.
Dave
I'm not really a great boot collector and don't have these shows, so if I'm
out of line, sorry.
When lowgen says *extended* he means - several minutes.
There was definitely no encore at the first Sydney concert, which is
the only one we have on tape (all versions are from the same, lone
source).
The performer had left the building.
The break in applause has a very simple explanation.
going through all these things twice, at least, maybe fourth time
around...
this is from a discussion of the same subject on r.m.d. almost 7 years
ago...

Sydney Stadium was a boxing arena, with the stage in the centre of the
audience. A revolving circle in the middle of the boxing ring was used
for
certain events, including the Dylan concerts, providing a good deal of
amusing stageplay. The performers had to walk up an aisle through a
portion
of the crowd after leaving the stage, before disappearing, which
accounts
for the strange little disconnected burst of applause. This was
explained
in the Isis article.
Oh well, my tape only has a few seconds after the second applause. Maybe my
mum went to the second show?
Dave O
True... is it possible to ask her? (hopefully she is still around?)
Yeah I could get her to check her diary for what day she went, what dates
were the shows again?
