Look, folks, once and for all, Self Portrait is a damn fine album. I'm
tired of it being trashed all of the time here. Bob is relaxed, we get
a great mix of live and out-takes and studio gems, rare self-duets,
Belle Isle and Copper Kettle (obviously not the duets I spoke of), and
plenty more. I can't go without hearing it for more than a month.

I think that's pretty much the consensus opinion on rmd. In fact, just a week
or two ago, there was a thread extolling its many virtues. I'm not sure from
whom it is you're revolting here.

Fair enough, but the album is quite trashy, wouldn't you say.

It's like Bob Dylan making an album that his mother would like.

I mean, there aren't any drug songs on it, are there, unless Quinn the
Eskimo is really an ecstacy dealer.

Some of us are just tired of debating it every two weeks. I think the music
was recorded at the wrong speed. NO doubt all Bob records have
interest but this one leaves me cold. Hey, remember I'm the guy who
is always defending KOL and New Morning so I know how you guys feel.

Quinn the Eskimo is purportedly a reference to a combination drug (strictly
recreational) of speed, smack & acid.

Or so I've been told.

I haven't googeld the arkives to ascertain source authority.

In sufficient dose, sounes like a pleasant way to Kevorkian.

Self-Portrait has grown on me...even "All The Tired Horses!"
As for the other two albums, I love New Morning and hate KOL. I don't ever
feel like debating any of this, that's just the way I feel, SP is great!

I agree though. Self Portrait is a pretty mediocre album compared to all 9
exceptional albums released up to that point (even Nashville Skyline). Some
tracks do shine though, but paying twice the money for a double album back then
when you were expecting something of Blonde On Blonde caliber must have been
somewhat of a let down.

It was a let down for me when I finally decided to buy it in the mid-70's. I
thought it was somewhat weak (and even boring at times) for a Dylan album and
regreted forking out weeks of my allowance for it. To me the album is as sloppy
as the cover. Showing for the first time the vulnerablity of an artist even as
infallible as Dylan was at the time. But all great artist have moments of
mediocrity.

It wasn't until many years after the advent of CD's that I bought Self Portrait
again. I enjoy it more now than I did back then. Being a single disc it's a lot
more accessable and seems less excessive compared to the vinyl verson.
