I hope this is the right group to post this; I'm not 100% sure if this is
Demento material... I'm looking for the lyrics to a lengthy song from
(60's?) about the sinking of the Titanic. Anyone know who wrote it and when,
and might you even have the lyrics to it? I would really appreciate it!

Thanks much!!

I dunno, the only one I can think of goes like:

Oh they built the ship Titanic
to sail the ocean blue
Was the greatest ship
That the waters ever knew.
But the good lord raised his head
said that ship will never stand
It was sad when the great ship went down .

CHORUS:
Husband's and wives,
itty bitty children lost their lives,
it was sad when that great ship went down (to the bottom of the sea)

I'm sure there were others though...

I'm not sure if it's the one you're thinking of, but
Michelle Shocked has a song about the Titanic from the
viewpoint of Jack Johnson*--I taped it off the radio, so I cant
tell you where to find a copy, but I can email you the lyrics.

*Jack Johnson (explains the preamble to the song) was the world
heavyweight champion at the time, and black, and when he bought
a ticket and tried to come up the gangplank the captain ripped
the ticket out of his hand and said, "This is a cruise ship,
not a coal hauler." 'That made Jack Johnson feel pretty low
until he heard the news about the Titanic a few days later, at
which point he commenced to feeling a little bit better'.

YES! This is the one! Thank you. Now if anyone has the lyrics, I will be
reeling with delight. (well, maybe that is a little much)
Thanks!

And the big ship went down and they all drowned like rats
And they died as their lungs filled with waterrrrrrr
(Dirgey nasal humming....)
And back on the shore, their wives had no insurance,
And their children turned to drugs and prostitutionnnnnnnn
(More humming)

This has nothing to do with the Titanic, except it was another ship that sank.

Yes indeedy, this is a cover of Jamie Brockett's song...titled
something like, "The True Story of the USS Titanic." Could you
post what radio station, so I can contact them? I want to find out
if Michelle's version is available.

The original is a *wonderful* song, about an album side long. If
anyone know what the album title is, please tell me! My ex-wife has
the album, but since she had it when we married, I guess I can't
complain.

"Well, they wouldn't let Jack Johnson on board,
they said this ship don't haul no coal,
fare thee well, Titanic, fare thee well..."

The song involved an early hippie who worked in a hemp rope factory,
and when the factory burned down, took a job as a first mate on the
Titanic...brought along 37 1/2 feet of rope...ended up getting the
Captain high, and things went downhill from there...

Well, the song was from a tape made during the
Folk Marathon (a fund-raising drive), so the album might not
even be in the station...that said, here's all the info I can
provide.
You'll be calling WTJU-FM at either (804)924-3418 or
(804)924-3959. Once there, ask for A) Tom Morgan, who's the
resident encyclopedia, B) Jamie Dyer C) Regina or D) Anyone
from the Folk Department. It's a University station (W Thomas
Jefferson U...get it?) so there's a wide variable in the
competency of the phone staff--dont get discouraged.

Ths song was written by Leadbelly and was recorded by lots of folk artists
as well as Michelle Shocked and a group called Freakwater. (I think it's
the same, maybe there's another). Anyway there is a line about Jack Johnson
on Leradbelly's version, jhe's the Black Boxer who was denied passage ion
the ship because he's black, Leadbelly talks about it. Tom Russell wrote
a song about Jack Johnson in which he also talks about Leadbelly's song. I
forget which Tom Russell album it's on but if you are interested in these
songs it's wotrth seeking out.
