For no especially good reason, some friends and I would like to find the
name of the artist and the complete lyrics to the song in the movie "Cool
Hand Luke", which begins with ...

I don't care if it rains or freezes,
Long as I got my plastic Jesus
Settin' on the dashboard of my car.

I think there are more lyrics than what was sung in the movie, but I'm not
certain of this.

Please email to me, or post here for the enjoyment of all.
Thanks.

Also, has anyone run across a CD or tape with a collection of such stupid
songs on it?

I can go a hundred miles an hour
Long as I got the almighty power
Glued up there by my pair of fuzzy dice.

I don't care if its dark and scary
Long as I got the Virgin Mary
Riddin on the dashboard of my car.

(Oops, I forgot the last verse.)

This song was made popular in NYC in the 70's by a D.J. named
Don Imus (Imus in the Morning) on the old WNBC who used to use it as a
lead in to his charachter The Right Reverend Dr. Billy Sol Hargis of the
First Church of Gooey Death and Discount House of Worship, for the salvation of
your soul, located in the heart of Del Rio, Texas (say amen). I was in High
School and it seemed funny at the time...

There are several versions for this last (quoted) line. Don
Imus used a recording of the song for Bill Sol Harggis, but its been
around long before Don Imus.

I have an old Intercollegiate Outing Club Association (IOCA)
songbook (now in about four pieces due to heavy (ab)use) that has about
18 or 19 verses in it for this song.

The last verse is something about how Plastic Jesus is hollow,
and his head comes off and the singer keeps whiskey in the statue.

If I can find my book, I'll try to remember to type in the words
at some point.

Barry - did you ever find out who performed the Imus version, and if a recording is available?

Thanks!

I didn't hear the "Plastic Jesus" song in that clip, but did hear his Billy Sol Hargis character.
