With Oliver Stone's movie, NIXON, on the way and KISSINGER AND NIXON on
television, I was wondering if y'all could think of some good
Nixon songs appropriate for the show...

I can only think of a few. "Nixon's the One" by John Flansburgh.
"Whatever Happened to Watergate" from the TV show, FRIDAYS. Uh... Well,
I guess I'm out of songs.

C'mon, there must be dozens of songs about Nixon.

I heard one song on Dr. D a while back. The chorus, and the name of the song,
were simply the names of 4 characters from the whole Watergate thing. No idea
what their names are.

Seems to me there was one called "The Nixorcist," with "Kissinger" doing
the honors. And let's not forget, "Tin soldiers and Nixon coming, we're
finally on our own..." OHIO/CSNY

Wasn't there a song when Nixon was running for president in the
fifties?

I think it was N-I-X-O-N

Actually, there's a band in Louisiana called the Dick Nixons. They do a lot
of Nixon songs (though I can't remember a single one--it's been a long time
since I've seen them.) I think they put out a record on Triple X Records a
number of years ago. They used to carry around big pics of Nixon and sort
of pray to him while on stage. They also had this gag where a girl from the
audience would either volunteer (or in my case, get thrown onto the stage
by a friend) to get up on stage and wear a football helmet with a cymbal
attached to the top of it. The drummer would play the cymbal througout a
song. Boy, did that hurt. I got my revenge, though; when one of them tried to
lift my miniskirt with his guitar headstock, I efficiently detuned the thing
for him. Silly band, funny concept, lousy musicians.

On Doodoo Wah's second album ("For Amusement Only"), we have a song
called "Nixon in '92." Dr. D played it on his election program that
year, and he has the album.

Try "Dickie's Such An A**hole" (pardon the French) by Frank Zappa. 1974 version can be found on "You Can't Do That On
Stage Anymore Vol 3" (Volume 3 *IF* I remember correctly), and 1988 (his last tour) version can be found on "Broadway The
Hard Way".

The latter album also contains somewhat unflattering critiques of figures such as Jesse Jackson ("Rhymin' Man"), C. Everett
Koop ("Promiscuous") and Jim & Tammy Bakker ("Jesus Thinks You're A Jerk").

Cheers & good luck finding others.

I know of two, but have no idea who did them. Both used to get a lot of
airplay on WBAI in New York
"If I Had a Friend Like Rosemary Woods"
and one where the chorus starts "Give him the shaft," including Nixon's
own voice saying those words. Then, an angelic chrous sings "You Won't
Have Nixon to Kick Around Anymore." Steve Post (formerly WBAI, now WNYC)
used to play this a lot.

My favorite Nixon-related song in "My Way," sung by David Frye
impersonating Nixon on one of his comedy LP's, either "Radio
Free Nixon" or "Richard Nixon Superstar." It's done almost
entirely "straight" except at the very end, when Frye's Nixon
interpolates "Let me make one thing perfectly clear!" before
the final "I did it my way!"

Sorry I missed the original post.

Spike Jones, Jr. recorded "Everything's All Right" (from "Jesus Christ
Superstar") using a Nixon impersonation for the vocal. I don't believe
this has ever been issued, but Dr. Demento has played it.

A record company that made nature sound effect albums released a 7" LP
with Nixon's famous Watergate speech edited to say: "I had prior
knowledge of the watergate breakin. I then took part in the subsequent
coverup activities." Etc. It sounds funny to actually hear him saying
these things!

Knew I had a strange one in the collection. Much like the David Frye
piece mentioned in 14353,
"I'm Gonna Make You Love Me (The President's Love Song) by The
Grim Brothers, has a caricture Nixon voice singing the song rather
straight. This came out on Mod M-1011, a 45 I have in my collection,
with a stamp of December, 1971 on it (the day it musta got to
WiMPLe's wait for it to be a hit pile). Oh yeah, small print
says it was distributed by Mercury Records.

Has anyone mentioned the "Haldeman, Erleickman, Mitchell and Dean"
song from the Watergate topics? A good follow-up was done by
Maurry Porath for the Reagan/Iran Contra scandal with those
names in that one. His live performances would update as each
got offical vindication from that; leaving off each name. I
forget all, but it ended with "...and North".

The best Nixon piece I have heard is Orson Welle's 'The Begatting of the
President'. Telling the story of nixon's ascendency to power as though it
were a biblical tale. It's Wonderful.
