I was thinking about if there were any songs that only got 1 play
on the Dr. Demento Show. Just off the top of my head, only one I
could think of was, and it may have been played before, Because I Got
High by Afro Man. Aired once on the Funny Five and even then the
Doctor almost sound like he added it because so many people requested
it. Against his will. :) I may have been wrong that it only aired
that once on the show. Any others?

What comes to mind is a song about mailing someone. Using mail as the
keyword in Jeff Morris' search engine yielded these "mail" songs which were
played on Dr. D only once:

I'm Gonna Sit Right Down And Type Myself An E-Mail - The Hawaii State
Hospital For The Criminally Insane Glee Club
E-Mail Legends - Marilyn Rucker
Alimony Blues - Norman Mailer
What Is Lissa Walking? - Mailbox
Psychic Voicemail Hotline - Tom Smith
Mail Me Home For Christmas - Mark Opatik
Lost In The Mail - Roman & Pudfunkel
Hail, All Hail The U.S. Mail - Robert Warren

-Ghastly Gary sez STAY DEMENTED!!!!!!!

That was only aired once? That's weird because Dr. D included it on
one of the basement tapes compilations.

Two of my early songs- "Dead Rubber Chickens" and "The Psychic Enemies
Network"- only aired once each. All the rest of my songs got at least
2 plays. "South Park Junkie" got the most plays with 11, if you don't
count "Peter Parker" (13), followed by "Ozzman" at 9.

Oh yeah -- the Cab City Combo One-Hit-Novelty-Wonders:

Louis, Louis (The understandable version of Louie, Louie)
and
The Italian Song (Another Reality Song Narrowcast Hit)

and lets not forget the No-Hit wonders... the ones I've BEGGED
to get on the air, and still remain unplayed.
on second thought, lets forget em.

I would venture to say that the population of songs that have been
played only once on Dr. Demento now outnumber the songs that have been
played multiple times. That would be looking at the SYNDication
airings, not looking back to the KMET or other live listings, NOR
counting the additional play on XM to be a multiple play, as all
material on XM is a repeat of a SYNDication show.

Now, I would say that John Mammoser is the King of the 'only played
oncers'. That is for artist with *many* plays, the most only played
once. In fact, I count 64:

"Weird Al" would also be in the running, with many tracks only
played once, as about 4 to 5 tracks per album got the major focus.

I have studied on this rather extensivly. In fact, here is a
summary of the 'only played once' notes I made in some playlists, mostly
the shows I recovered to the PC from tape or LP:

* Entire show repeated in 1996.

Now there are some that probably made the listing due to differences
in spellings, or have been played since October, 2003.
Some events of 1995 helped to contribute to the 'only onceness' of
the above songs:
-O J trial & such
-Death of Burl Ives
-Death of Wolfman Jack
-release of DrD "Mother Goose" CD

Let's come up with the ones that should get played again, at least
one more time. For me, 5 would include:
It Never Rains In Sunny California - Spike Jones
Send 'Em Back - The Foremen [may have been played again already]
I Know An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Fly - Burl Ives
There's A Moose On The Loose - Roddy Jackson [for the great Moose medly]
Mountain Dew - Bascom Lamar Lunsford [let's hear it for the red states]

This has been played many times, but you're right, lots of John's bits only
get played once. I didn't realize there were so many!

I thought I got the '99 version away from the original, that was
played many times and seems to be the prefered version.

added note I forgot to add: some may have been played again when the original
shows they appearred on was repeated on XM Radio about 10 years later.

Hee. For years, I've tried to get Doctor Octopus - Part 2 from
the Spider-Man Rock Reflections Of A Super Hero played on the show. I
thought with the release of, first, the Spider-Man movie, and then
Spider-Man 2, I might have a shot. :) I guess the rights aren't
freely available or are expensive.

My song The Personals only deserved, er, got one play as well. And I
never sent him the other song that was better - well, the revised
version of the other song without the word he couldn't air, anyway. In
fact, I still haven't redubbed the stupid thing.

Disneyland Dream is my personal favorite song from the Dr. D show.

I know Whimsical Will knows that all too well, from my requests:)

The original "9 Coronas" has certainly been played a lot. Then in 1996
came "10 Coronas", which was played several times. Then came "9 Coronas ('99)"
which is just "10 Coronas" with a different ending, as I recall. Since 1999,
that has been the preferred version, with completely different verses than
the original.
