Just for kicks, how many of VH-1's top 100 one hit wonders have been

Bart Simpson's performance of that song on a church organ was aired on Dr.

Ron Butterfly.

in Pittsburgh"

57. "Smokin' In The Boys Room" by Brownsville Station (1973)

Tim Cavanagh did a parody of this called "Smokin' In My Mom's Womb"

I couldn't think of any parodies you didn't already list (and boy did
some of those bring back memories... now I'll have "99 Dead Babboons"
running through my head all day!) but was surprised to see how many
of these were improved by the musical genius that is Marty Kaniger
and the rest of Big Daddy:

>83."The Safety Dance" by Men Without Hats (1983)

In the Big Daddy motif, this is performed in the style of Chubby
Checker doing "The Twist".

>46."Don't Worry Be Happy" by Bobby McFerrin (1988)

- as Sam Cooke doing "Twisting the Night Away"

>24."Whip It" by Devo (1980)

Never could figure out who the Big Daddy version is supposed to be by,
but it's my least favorite - I could hardly tell it from the original!

>7."Ice Ice Baby" by Vanilla Ice (1991)

- as Chuck Berry doing "Johnny B. Goode"

Ahhh, those were the days. "No, it's not a La-Z-Boy, can't you see...
it's a dead babboon!"

While I'm on a rant...

>79."Puttin' On The Ritz" by Taco (1983)

Can I assume this bears no resemblance whatsoever to the Fred
Astaire version? The mind boggles.

> - "500 Miles" by The Complainers

Ditto re: Peter, Paul, and Mary (and the Highwaymen, and every other
folk rock Dylan wannabe...)

> 28."It Takes Two" by Rob Base & DJ EZ Rock (1988)

I've seen "Ugly Girl" and a web search turned up plenty of other
parodies ("Intern Girl", "Bimbo Girl", etc.) but Aqua shouldn't count
as a One Hit Wonder because the had another top-ten song: "Turn Back
Time". I don't know if it counts as a parody bacause I don't undersand
the lyrics but there is a Hebrew verson of Barbie Girl out on the net.

> 79."Puttin' On The Ritz" by Taco (1983)

Performed by Dr. F. and the monster in the movie "Young
Frankenstein". They didn't change the words so I guess that isn't
really a parody.

Adding some I know of...

Mulan already was a parody of this :)

>91."Electric Avenue" by Eddie Grant (1983)
> - "Flatbush Avenure" by "Weird Al" Yankovic

I never heard of this Weird Al parody. Is it one of his unreleased
song (like "It's All Billy Joel To Me")?

>88."Barbie Girl" by Aqua (1987)
> - Here's another one I thought I remembered hearing one for.

Ugly Girl by Killerspam (same person who did "My Girlfriend is
Inflatable")

>79."Puttin' On The Ritz" by Taco (1983)

I know there was a parody of this one, something about "popping all my
zits".

>66."Mambo No. 5" by Lou Bega (1999)
> - I saw a flash animation about a Chinese restaurant called "Combo
>Number 5".
> - "Heart Attack No. 5" by John Mammoser

"Bimbo No. 5" by (I think) Bob Rivers (as Bubba Clinton)

>57. "Smokin' In The Boys Room" by
>Brownsville Station (1973)

I know I heard a "Smoking in the Girls Room" parody many (more than
10) years ago, no idea who did the song.

>53."Somebody's Watching Me" by Rockwell (1984)

Again, I remember hearing a parody of this one back in the late 80's.

>51."I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" by The Proclaimers (1995)
> - "500 Miles" by The Complainers

"500 Hats" by Tom Smith (unless I'm thinking of a different song that
is being parodied there)

>50."I Touch Myself" by The Divinyls (1991)

No parody needed, it speaks for itself :)

>47."Rock & Roll, Pt. 2" by Gary Glitter (1972)

"Doctorin' the Tardis" by the Timelords/KLF

>24."Whip It" by Devo (1980)

For some reason, I'm thinking Weird Al here. I know he did a style
parody (Dare to be Stupid), but he may have done a specific parody to
this song as well.

>21."Cars" by Gary Numan (1980)

"Bars" by I have no clue, but I've heard it a few times on Dr D.

>19."In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida " by Iron Butterfly (1968)

Well, there is the Springfiled version....

>4."I'm Too Sexy" by Right Said Fred (1992)

Well, there was Robin Williams doing Elmer Fudd singing "Fire". Is
that what you are remembering?

Play That Filky Music - Power Salad, and Chris/Power Salad didn't even mention that one.

1966, was it? Good tune and not from the 50's. That restores my belief that the 50's
were uncool.
96 Tears could be the base of a parody about the junk available at The 99 Cent Store.

Does Motley Crue's version count as a parody?!..

It's not a parody, but Too Much Joy does a great cover of this song.

> - "Rice Rice Baby" by ?

I think that's by Mark Jonathan Davis.. (You might know him better as Richard
Cheese these days) if it's not him, it's the "Iceman", i'm almost sure.. never
heard it, but i seen it listed some where on his site I think.

>4."I'm Too Sexy" by Right Said Fred (1992)
> - wasn't there a parody of this sung by an Emler Fudd impersonator?

I wrote one of this called "I'm Too Whaskly (for my wabbit) and if i knew Mark
McCollum's address then i would have sent him the song, it would have been
perfect for him.

I would have thought there's more than that too.. then again when VH1 makes up
these lists, they are so arbitrary as if there's no basis for their rankings..
as if they just pick the first 100 songs they can think off that fit the
category.

96 Tears? #15?
Stumblin In? Got To Be Real? Me & Mrs. Jones? there's a few i have never heard
of.. and maybe i just don't recognize them by their titles, but that should be
enough to keep them out of the top 100...

Most of the ones I thought of have been mentioned by others, but
here's a few more....

> 95."Harper Valley P.T.A." by Jeannie C. Riley (1968)

"Harper Valley PTA (Later The Same Day)" by Sheb Wooley...it's on a
tape I picked up at Walgreen's called "Twenty Greatest Hits of 1968",
which suggests a different definition of "hits" than the one I
normally use....

> 79."Puttin' On The Ritz" by Taco (1983)

You haven't lived until you've checked out the version of this at
www.dictionaraoke.org..."Take On Me" and "Barbie Girl" get the
treatment too....

> 37."I Melt With You" by Modern English (1982)

Mentioned prominently in "Hell Is A Disco" by Wammo, played just a
couple of weeks ago by Dr D...(first time I ever got to see what my
favorite Phoenix DJ looked like, she was interviewing Modern English
on the release of their *second* single; I may still have the video
around here somewhere)....

> 36."Turning Japanese" by The Vapors (1980)

"Turning Kakujin" by J K Yakamoto, played *once* on the February 8th,
1981 show....

> 6."Who Let The Dogs Out" by Baha Men (2000)
> - "Who Let The Frog Out" by The Great Luke Ski

I *really* wanted to do a country version called "Who Let the Pigs
Out" with snorting in place of the woofing, but the idea seems kind of
derivative now....

Was kind of disappointed to find that Jill Sobule didn't make the
list...I may *never* find a copy of the video for "I Kissed A Girl" at
the rate things are going....r

Don't recall the title exactly, but probably "In Pain"

>97."Whoomp! There It Is" by Tag Team (1993)

Shadd-Rapp "Shoot 'Dere It Is"

>96."I Want Candy" by Bow Wow Wow (1982)

This is too easy a melody for there not to be several parodies.

>80."Cum On Feel The Noize" by Quiet Riot (1983)

the charts. "Ozzy Fudd - Wabbit Slayer" is similar to "Metal Health"

I'm pretty sure Bob Rivers has parodied this one, too.

"I've Been To Me (And It's No Thrill)" - Joy Grdnic/Richard Levinson

>57. "Smokin' In The Boys Room" by Brownsville Station (1973)

Two by Bob Rivers that I think parody this song (I haven't heard them
"Women in the Locker Room"
"Gropin' in the Classroom"

>47."Rock & Roll, Pt. 2" by Gary Glitter (1972)

No. I've heard that one. I'm pretty sure there was a line that went
something like "I'm too sexy for the wabbit, dat scwewy scwewy wabbit." But
I can't remember where I heard it.

No one else thought of these, so:

I Want Candy - The Simpsons' Smile-Time Variety Hour (This was on a Simpsons
soundtrack album, so it counts)

Another parody that no one else has mentioned of this one is:
Go Shopping - Mandi Segal w/ Schtillson & Govatinberg

>15."96 Tears" by ? And The Mysterians (1966)

I think someone mentioned John Mammoser's "96 Beers", but there was also
another song by the same title Dr. Demento played many years earlier, by
J.J. & The WRIF Morning Crew w/ Dick the Bruiser on vocals

>12."Baby Got Back" by Sir Mix-A-Lot (1994)

Also "Baby Got Gas" which I heard on a Louisville radio station back in 1992,
but I never found out who did it.

>11."You Light Up My Life" by Debby Boone (1977)

Al used to do a cover of this live in a new wave style, but again I don't
know if that qualifies as a parody. What does, however, is "You Write Up
My Wife" by The Capitol Steps.

Someone already pointed out that some of these acts have had more than one
top 40 hit, and many of them have had multiple hot 100 hits, so I don't know
what their criteria is for calling someone a "one hit wonder". Also, they
mostly seem to be doing 1970 and afterwards, but they did list one from the
60s. Then why in the world did they not list the #1 one-hit wonder of all
time: "In The Year 2525 (Exordium & Terminus)" by Zager & Evans? They had
a #1 hit for six weeks, and then were never seen on the charts again (except
for "Mr. Turnkey" which bubbled under the hot 100 shortly afterwards. That
is quite an amazing chart statistic, and there is no way that song should be
left out of a one-hit wonders countdown.

Someone on Opie and Anthony called in last week and said that the criteria
for a "one hit wonder" is someone who has had only one song in the top 10.
I don't know whether that's supposed to be the popular definition, or if
that's what VH1 was using. I don't even know if the guy was right, but I
thought I'd throw it out there.

They listed *two* from the sixties, or did you miss "Harper Valley
PTA?"....

Anyway, for completely unrelated reasons last year, I was looking for
one-hit wonders by *my* definition, which was this:

(1) one single that got to #1....

(2) no other songs in the top 40 either before or after....

(3) delete the sneaky ones where the leader of a hitmaking group had
one hit as a solo, or where a group changed its name mid-career....

(4) start after Elvis's first #1 (before that too much Patti Page-
style pop)...others might want to choose a different starting point
(Bill Haley or Woodstock?)....

(5) stop at 1999 since some who had only one hit before that might
just be waiting to strike again....

Here's the list that I came up with:

56.06.16 "The Wayward Wind" Gogi Grant
58.06.09 "The Purple People Eater" Sheb Wooley
58.08.18 "Nel Blu Dipinto Di Blu (Volare)" Domenico Modugno

61.05.22 "Mother-in-Law" Ernie K-Doe
62.03.10 "Hey! Baby" Bruce Channel
62.05.26 "Stranger on the Shore" Mr. Acker Bilk
62.07.07 "The Stripper" David Rose & His Orchestra
62.11.22 "Telstar" The Tornadoes
63.06.15 "Sukiyaki" Kyu Sakamoto
63.12.07 "Dominique" The Singing Nun
64.12.05 "Ringo" Lorne Greene
65.09.25 "Eve of Destruction" Barry McGuire
66.12.03 "Winchester Cathedral" The New Vaudeville Band
68.01.20 "Judy in Disguise (with Glasses)"
John Fred & His Playboy Band
68.02.03 "Green Tambourine" The Lemon Pipers

73.04.07 "The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia" Vicki Lawrence
73.08.25 "Brother Louie" Stories
74.08.17 "The Night Chicago Died" Paper Lace
74.11.23 "I Can Help" Billy Swan
74.12.07 "Kung Fu Fighting" Carl Douglas
75.04.05 "Lovin' You" Minnie Riperton
76.07.10 "Afternoon Delight" Starland Vocal Band
76.09.18 "Play That Funky Music" Wild Cherry
76.10.09 "A Fifth of Beethoven" Walter Murphy & The Big Apple Band
76.10.16 "Disco Duck (Part 1)" Rick Dees & His Cast of Idiots
77.04.16 "Don't Give Up On Us" David Soul
77.07.02 "Gonna Fly Now (Theme from 'Rocky')"
Bill Conti & His Orchestra
77.07.09 "Undercover Angel" Alan O'Day
77.10.15 "You Light Up My Life" Debby Boone
78.10.28 "Hot Child in the City" Nick Gilder
79.04.21 "Knock on Wood" Amii Stewart
79.06.30 "Ring My Bell" Anita Ward
79.11.03 "Pop Muzik" M

92.02.08 "I'm Too Sexy" Right Said Fred
92.07.04 "Baby Got Back" Sir Mix-A-Lot
92.11.14 "How Do You Talk to An Angel" The Heights
94.12.17 "Here Comes the Hotstepper" Ini Kamoze
97.05.24 "Mmmbop" Hanson
98.??.?? "Lately" Divine

If you assume that VH1 started in mid-1968, they did a pretty decent
job of covering the latter part of this list, although there are a few
significant absences...the Steam, Paper Lace, and Alan O'Day
singles would have fit right into the Shatner-induced cheese
atmosphere...and of course to get a hundred they had to include a
bunch that were never number one (Bow Wow Wow and The
Waitresses?...why not Frank Zappa for "Valley Girl"?)...the criterion
was probably "what do we have in the way of interesting video and some
enticing background info?"...

One nice thing about the special...it's not often that you get to hear
the names Chumbawumba and Kajagoogoo mentioned in such
proximity...just wish they'd managed to work in Chilliwack....r

Well, they certainly weren't using that definition. Many of the artists
they listed never even had a top ten hit. For instance:

"No Rain" by Blind Melon peaked at #20
"I Want Candy" by Bow Wow Wow peaked at #62
"What's Up" by 4 Non Blondes peaked at #14

At least, these were their peak positions on the Billboard Hot 100 chart,
which I always consider to be the definitive source for information like
this, but there are many other charts.
