Part I: "Trekkies" the movie
I saw the documentary film "Trekkies" a couple weeks ago. I liked it. I
recommend it to those who are interested in the subject. Here's some of my
thoughts on it's content…
At one point in the film, they touched upon the question I posed in by newest
hit, "You Might Be A Trekkie", 'What exactly is the difference between a
'Trekker' and a 'Trekkie'?'. While none of them gave anything close to my
response, it sparked some interesting debate amongst those interviewed. Kate
Mulgrew had some really interesting insights on it…
Also, connected to my "You Might Be A Trekkie" stand-up bit, the filmmakers
also interviewed Barbara Adams, the Arkansas woman who made headlines last year
by 'showing up for Jury Duty in her Starfleet Uniform', for the
Clinton/Whitewater trial. I assume most of you hard core Trekkies picked up on
that first joke being about her and that event. There is a second joke in "You
Might Be A Trekkie" that is based on something that happened in real life. If
you can guess which one it is, I'll send you a free copy of "Carpe Dementia" on
CD!…
When they asked "Who's your favorite Captain?", I was perturbed to see that NO
ONE said SISKO! There were a few people dressed as Bajoran Vedeks who said
that 'none shall be placed higher that the Emissary', but that was it. It just
goes to show the lack of support for "Deep Space Nine", the BEST Trek show in
my opinion. But anyway…
Here's the kicker. There was this guy they kept interviewing, but WHY I don't
know. He wasn't dressed as a Star Trek character, he was dressed as a woman.
I saw no direct ties between him being dressed as a woman and Star Trek, so I
couldn't understand why they were talking to him. I guess they needed some
freak appeal. So, they cut back to him at one point and he mentions 'filking'.
He defines it as 'science fiction folk singing', so the interviewer asks for
an example. The guy, excuse me, girl starts rolling his eyes in that 'trying
to think of something' way, and then starts singing some song accapella about
the classic Star Trek episode that Khan was in. It was excruciatingly
horrible. Not the song, just his performance and delivery of it. He couldn't
remember most of the words, and the camera kept zooming in closer on his face
for that 'look into the eyes of the madman' effect. And THIS is the nationally
immortalized representation of what 'FILK' is? I was like
NNOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is an atrocity!!! If they wanted filk, they
could have called Tom Smith! Hell, they could have called ME!!! I woulda
given 'em a filk show that woulda smaked the rubber points off of their ears!!!
Oh, well. It's Star Trek. They'll do a sequel. >:)
