The song ``One More Minute'' by Weird AL (which I find GREAT)
SEEMS to be based on a known medley, but I can't quite place it
and am coming to the conclusion that it is actually a ``new'' medley
(Well, wheather anything is ``new'' can be debated, especially
after hearing the words to GILLIGANS ISLAND to the tune of
STAIRWAY TO HEAVEN)

SO, is ONE MORE MINUTE a satire of an old song, or just written
in the same Style.

As an example, the RUTLES music is all beatles-STYLE, but all new
tunes, where, of course ``Eat it' and `Still Billy Joel
to me' are based on tunes. ``The biggest ball of twine in
Minesoda'' I am pretty sure is a style thing.

Enough babbling, I have asked a solid question about
ONE MORE MINUTE and want an answer. Post to the net.
Any other thoughts on Style vs. tune are welcome as well,
especially since this net has been a bit dormant lately.

No, it's just a different type of parody he does of someone's style rathern
than an actual song - the classic "Dog Eat Dog" is another example (subtitled
"Canine Cannibalism" or so I heard him say in an interview).

>tunes, where, of course ``Eat it' and `Still Billy Joel

I have never heard "Still Billy Joel to Me" and I'd like to know where I can
get it. I have all the published albums and the original version of "My
Bologna" as published on the Dr. D collection, and I have his "Compleat Al",
and the book, and I'd have UHF but it costs too @#$%& much, but I haven't seen
this.

"Biggest Ball of Twine..." is a completely original song, so far as I know.
He does these from time to time... (they're more than 40% of his total,
actually!). I have noticed that he likes to experiment a lot - he's done
Christmas Music (no, wait, "Christmas at Ground Zero" was done to the tune
of "I Yust Go Nuts at Christmas" by Yogi Yorgessen), country-western (the
hilarious "Good enough for now"!), rap (Twister) (or whatever style that was
supposed to be), etc. - a very wide range. Now how about a classical
Hungarian rhapsody, or maybe some 12th century monotonic chants? (hey, don't
laugh, Monty Python did it... remember "Die Jesu Domine... <THUD> Dona eis
Requiem... <THUD>"??)

Better still, when is "UHF II" coming out? (OK, OK, I know...)

I think it's a stylistic parody rather than a parody of a specific song.
The canonical example of the style would, I'd say, be "The Great Pretender."
(Stan Freberg, of course, did a specific parody of that, poking particular
fun at the distinctive piano part, i.e. endless eighth notes beating out the
chords.)

I've always thought that the chorus of "Biggest Ball of Twine..." was very
similar (but not the same) as Gordon Lightfoot's "Wreck of the Edmund
Fitzgerald", but the verses aren't in the same style. I rather admire Weird
Al's talent as both a parodist (I just about died watching the "Like a
Surgeon" video) and as a style swiper. One of my favorite Weird Al "originals"
is "That Boy Can Dance" (or something) which appeared as the B-side of
the "Eat
It" single.

There is a song by Harry Chapin (I cant remember the title) that sounds
alot like Biggest Ball of Twine.....The parts about reaching the state line
about 6:49 is almost exactly like a part of Chapin's song....
If I remember the title I will post it.....

Hey, can we start a r.m.dementia thread I wanted for a while? The Catonical
List of Weird Al Parodies. Map the parodies to the originals, either tunes or
"general style" will do. For instance, I could start with:

Al Song Real world
======= ==========
I Love Rocky Road I Love Rock 'n Roll (Billy Joel)
Eat It Beat It (Michael Jackson)
Dare to be Stupid DEVO(?)
Girls Just Wanna Have Girls Just Wanna Have
Lunch Fun (Cindi Lauper)
Isle Thing Wild Thing (Tone Loc?)

Anybody interested in finishing this? I know about 60% of the parodies, but
there are some I cannot place ("King of Suede", "Dog Eat Dog", to name two).

>I have never heard "Still Billy Joel to Me" and I'd like to know where I can
>get it. I have all the published albums and the original version of "My

>this.

It's hard to find ANYWHERE. I have all the Al-albums, and even Al's
"School Cafeteria", but I have never heard "Still Billy Joel" anywhere. I
think it's in litagation limbo.

>"Biggest Ball of Twine..." is a completely original song, so far as I know.
>He does these from time to time... (they're more than 40% of his total,
>actually!). I have noticed that he likes to experiment a lot

I'm glad. I like a lot of Al's stuff, whether it's a parody or an original,
but I like some of the originals more than I like the parodies. When the
novelty of taking off an established song wears off, it's original works like
"Stuck In a Closet With Vanna White", "Happy Birthday", "Slime Creatures
From Outer Space", "Good Enough for Now", and "That Boy Can Dance" that
_still_ give me a thrill.

> - he's done
>Christmas Music (no, wait, "Christmas at Ground Zero" was done to the tune
>of "I Yust Go Nuts at Christmas" by Yogi Yorgessen), country-western (the
>hilarious "Good enough for now"!), rap (Twister) (or whatever style that was

Yeah -- ain't it great? You might want to add parodies of ballads ("The
Biggest Ball of Twine"), blues ("Buckingham Blues" and "Generic Blues"), and
polka (c'mon, you're kidding, right?). The best Al-rap, BTW, IMO, has to be
"Isle Thing"...

>Better still, when is "UHF II" coming out? (OK, OK, I know...)

The Los Angeles/live Dr. Demento Show of 6/10/1990 mentioned that Al is
"now working on his next album", so I'd give it a few months. Yeah!

--R.J.
B-)

P.S. And as for me, I find that I like more songs per album as the album
is more "recent". Almost everything on "Even Worse" and "UHF (and
other stuff)" is a winner with me, whereas I rank more of the tunes on
the earlier albums as "it's okay, but not great" material...

Well, I'm not a Weird Al fan, but I'm always glad to correct people:

Someone who looked a lot like pock...@cs.umn.edu (Mitch Pockrandt) said:
>
>> Isle Thing Wild Thing (Tone Loc?)
> ^^^^^^^^^
> Could be The Troggs. Did
> Isle Thing come out before
> Tone Loc's cover of this?

I haven't heard "Isle Thing", but anyone who's heard Tone-Loc's "Wild
Thing" will recognize that it's NOT a cover of the Troggs' classic.
In fact it bears only a vague similarity, if that.

Sorry I deleted this person's name, but in reference to:

>> Anybody interested in finishing this? I know about 60% of the parodies, but
>>there are some I cannot place ("King of Suede", "Dog Eat Dog", to name two).

"Dog Eat Dog", according to a reliable source, is not a parody of any
specific song, just a general Talking Heads-style song.

> King Of Suede King of Pain - The Police
> (or was it just Sting?)

It was the Police. On "Synchronicity".

> I Think I'm A Clone Now I Think We're Alone Now
> (I have heard this by at
> least three bands in the
> last 15 years, and I don't
> recall any of the names.)

It's a popular cover, but the original version was by Tommy James and
the Shondells (who also did the original "Mony Mony", as well as "Crimson
and Clover" which was covered by Joan Jett -- why hasn't Al parodied
that one?)

> Lasagna La Bamba - ?

La Bamba is an old folk song, but the rock version was originally done
by Richie Valens, later covered by Los Lobos among others.

> Alimony Mony, Mony - ?

Tommy James again, but the version I hear most often is Billy Idol's cover.

I think .. Specifically for that Album, the version parodied (If a specific
version CAN be parodied) was Tiffany's version (done in 1988 [or so])

Anyone know how Dr. D can be heard in Buffalo, NY nowadays ?? ..

Just wondering ..
