Hey, is Dr D doing his show at Reed?

I'm in Chicago, but I would like to see Dr D live again--last time was
College of DuPage years ago!

It's pretty early for any announcement on that, at least from Reed.
There's not usually anything on either Reed's web site or
drdemeneto.com until the second week in Janaury.

However, if someone _does_ hear about it, please post it here. I try
to get to at least one presentation each year.

DR. DEMENTO APPEARS AT REED COLLEGE, PORTLAND, OR.

Once again this year Dr. Demento will be presenting four programs at
his alma mater, Reed College, located in Portland, OR on S.E.
Woodstock Blvd.

All programs will be in the Vollum Lecture Hall.

If you use the main campus entrance, Woodstock Blvd. at Reed College
Place, Vollum is the modern brick building straight ahead of you.
(Parking is off to your right).

Admission is free to the public.

Thursday January 21, 8 PM: Can You Win (or stop) A War With Music?

Before he became the funny music dude, Dr. Demento (Barry Hansen '63)
was a folkie. While at Reed he interviewed Pete Seeger for the Quest.
He got his M.A. degree from UCLA in Folk Music Studies. Tonight's
presentation covers the legends of 1960s protest song -- Seeger, Phil
Ochs, early Dylan -- and those who carry on the fight today...but
we'll also hear some of the songs that helped convince young Americans
to go to war.

Friday 1-22, 8 PM: Songs I Can't Play on the Dr. Demento Radio Show

Since 1970 Dr. Demento has been besieging the guardians of media
morality with his weekly radio show. He gets away with a lot, but
there are certain songs, even today, that he can't play on the air,
because of those Seven Dirty Words and quite a few other reasons.
There's something here to offend just about everyone...a few of these
even offend the Doctor, but he'll play 'em anyway, for what they may
reveal about the American psyche. Not for children!

Saturday 1-23, 3 PM: From Ragtime to Rap in an Hour and a Quarter

A speedy survey of the evolution of American pop music from the
beginning of the record industry to the present day. As an avid
collector and student of pop music since the 1950s, Dr. Demento knows
what's really important in every era -- ragtime, the Jazz Age, the
Swing Era, and all the ages of rock -- how it all evolved, and the one
crucial transition that's repeated itself over and over since before
1900 and still goes on today.

Saturday, 1-23 - 8 PM Dr. Demento's Autobiography, live and in person

Since Barry Hansen '63 made his radio debut right here at KRRC, he's
gone on to host the nationally syndicated Dr. Demento radio show. He
discovered "Weird Al" Yankovic when Al was just 16, and popularized
"Fish Heads," "Dead Puppies," and a whole lot of songs by Frank Zappa,
Monty Python, Spike Jones, etc. etc. He'll tell stories about the Olde
Daze of KRRC and lots more highlights (and one or two lowlights) of
his career, with lots of hilarious songs in audio and video. (Note:
this program is a bit different from the Festival of Dementia
presented last year and earlier. It was originally developed for
Mensa's national convention in July 2009).
