well now, I'm sure in her line of work she would have aids.

Aides to tell her how she sounds.

Don't forget that she's marrying Tommy Lee along with Pamela, and they are
going to start up a polygamist branch of country music. ;)

Dolly Parton says she's going to pose for Playboy when she's 100, and then
everybody's gonna be sorry.

I don't think people should call Shania a "WHORE", she is an ARTIST!
She may dress sexy, but hey she's got the body and works very hard to keep her
body in good shape! If you got it flaunt it! She started out country and has
gone to pop, also some country songs she still sings sold out concerts.
Her concerts in Kamloops, British Columbia,Canada were sold out in 15
minutes, also in Vancouver, Canada. So what does this tell you????

I agree. She's not a whore, no one should be called that. You're missing the
point. As a singer, you're suppposed to have musical talent, and when you
substitute sexual appeal for singing talent, you cheapen yourself.

It tells me what the operative word is here: Sold Out. As long as she
continues to pursue a pop career that she's apparently sold out to, why does
she continue to seek the country awards?

Make the break, Shania -- declare your intentions, go for MTV and pop-rock,
take your fans with you and give us a break - let the real country artists have
a shot at the Country Charts without you. Perhaps, with time, the standards of
real Country music will improve with your leaving.

It's very easy to critical rip to shreds those who are successful. Who cares
if she SOLD OUT?? The point is that she is following HER dream, which she
built. Are you following yours?

BTW, she does have musical ability. Ask 10 million people. They'll all
agree.

You're really just making up numbers to back your baseless argument here. If
nine million people thought she had no musical talent and just loved how she
looked in her videos, she would be selling ten million copies of her videos and
100,000 copies of her CD.

I have a feeling that James made that "numbers" comment somewhat in jest
and to make a point. I'm sure he did not intend for those numbers to be
taken literally.

"If nine million people thought she had no musical talent and just loved

I must admit, you have a pretty good point here. Personally, I think
Shania has a decent voice; And, although she is beautiful, I can list
about 15 other female country artists who look a whole lot more
attractive than she does. My problem is with her pathetic songwriting
ability and how she flaunts her stuff a little..no, a lot....too much

Yeah, wasn't "No One Needs To Know" hot! And how about that "God Bless the

Now, seriously ...

You know, I don't really care about Alanis Morrisette's music (bet I can't

People buy CDs for the looks... why else would Brittany Spears be selling like
hotcakes? Why else did the New Kids On The Block sell so much? And I'm not
making up any more numbers than the original poster was. There are plenty of
people I know that own "Come On Over", and they cannot stand Shania. They just

CD covers have really nice pictures in them. When you have gimmicky songs and
a hot body being flaunted all over soft-core videos, marginal talent starts to
take a back seat.

Chely Wright
Sara Evans
Suzy Bogguss
Martina McBride
Mindy McCready (we're going on looks here, not talent)
Jewel Kilcher (if she ever jumps over to the country charts)

That's six that I just named off the top of my head. And, aside from Mindy,
not one of them makes slutty or super-suggestive videos.

Shania's videos aren't slutty or super-suggestive. Her critics are just
super-sensitive. "Slutty" is a very strong word. "Justify My Love" was a
slutty video. You really need to learn the difference between I challenge you
to name one Shania video where she's being sexually careless, sleeping around
or doing anything else "slutty."

It's preteen GIRLS buying the Britney Spears CD. Her music is aimed at that
market, and the kids love her sound.

Same reason Britney Spears sold so many CD's. The music was aimed at preteens.
When the kids outgrew the music, sales fell off.

You know some strange people then. If you don't like an album by an artist,
why would you go out and buy the next one? And since even the people you know
didn't buy it "for the pictures," as you claim most record buyers do, your
little theory becomes even more ridiculous.

Every artist has albums that end up being sold to used CD stores. What does
that have to do with anything?

I'm just being optimistic. I'm aware that, as with any artist, Shania's
popularity could fall off anytime. But if her career ended tomorrow, she would
break the record for quickest drop-off from superstar to nobody.

expressed time and time again that I'm obviously in the minority on my
opinion of her. So I completely agree with the above comment. As
stated before, she has some talent, but that talent is hidden behind
superficial ditties and risque mannerisms. A couple of months ago, I
was one of the more vocal supporters of Ms. Twain's right to be country;
however, after seeing her disgraceful performance on the Grammys and her
latest video, I'm not as convinced as I once was.

"You know some strange people then. If you don't like an album by an
artist, why would you go out and buy the next one?"

Actually, I thought this was rather common practice. Several people in
this ng mentioned that they were disappointed in Strait's last album,
but that didn't keep them from purchasing his new one. Also, people who
couldn't stand TWIM may have enjoyed the first single or two from COO
and, as a result, purchased the CD thinking it to be better...only to be
disappointed after the purchase.

I could understand in George's case cause he has a great track record, so you
could give him another chance after a dud. But if you didn't like "The Woman
In Me," you should've known "Come On Over" wasn't gonna be your cup of tea
either, especially by the first two singles.

We agree here. "Country" is much too narrow a definition to encompass Shania
Twain's talent. I don't like to hear her called Queen of Country any more than
her opponents here do. Difference is they think it's too much for her and I
think it's too little.

Not rude... realistic... You made a stupid statement... and people in here
will tell you I will call them as I see them.. ...

Shania shows more than her midriff... her cleavage at every chance.. I was
shocked to see her ... dressed at the ACM's... Her video's are very SEXUAL
.... I Feel Like a Woman... doesn't belong on CMT !
The ONLY reason that video or any other Shania video's are played on CMT is
because she is the most requested artist there... Its not because she is
country ... Which she isn't... (by the way, I got that info from CMT
themselves....)

She only claims country music at awards time. All the other times she is
thumbing her nose at the country music industry and she has proven that ...

When she came to Houston Pop Station KRBE got the official
announcement...Why is that ?? If she is country, why didn't KKBQ, KILT or
KIKK get the announcement...why did they have to read about it in the
newspaper.. (from what I understand, its been like just about in all
cities)....Now, why would she make a stupid decision not to send the
announcements to all stations here in Houston... Where her cd's sales are
generally the highest in the U.S.

Why when she does her first special, she completely left country out in the
cold and invited other pop acts... There are LOTS of young people on Spring
Break that loves country music... and her fans would of welcome any country
artist with wide open arms...

She is only country when she feels it necessary.... Heck, my husband was
laughing so hard asking me... hey is the last time Dick Clark, asked anyone,
if they had anything else to add... I looked at him and said...after an ass
chewing.... Ummm, I wonder if he reminded her, that she was at a country
award show..
It brought back memories of American Bandstand !

now you made a statement elsewhere on the NG about Strait and Reba... When
did they get someone fired from MCA ... do you have proof of this ??

You make it sound like that's a bad reason to play her. If she's the most
requested artist, she belongs on the channel. Apparently country fans as a
whole don't share your opinion of Shania. Suck it up and deal.

>Its not because she is

Funny, Chris Parr, program director of CMT, was quoted as saying Shania is the
preeminent country video artist and credited her for bringing new listeners to
the format. Who did you talk to?

The only other country artists popular enough to share the stage with Shania
already get their own TV specials.

The artists were chosen for ratings punch. Backstreet Boys and Elton John will
bring in a lot more viewers than Lila McCann and Kenny Chesney.

She's made it clear that her music isn't very country and she's happy that she
can get airplay on various formats because she has so many musical influences.

The nice thing about living in America, I don't have to worship Shania...
and I refuse to... I am not a Garth fan either...but that is another story
within its self.

Shania isn't the queen of country music or any other type of music, as far
as I am concerned.... Just because she sells doesn't make her great ! I had
friends that were buying Garth CD's on blind faith, because it was Garth and
they said several CD's were a mistake.. Now they know to preview the CD's,
before they buy...

many people I known ... did the same thing with shania...buy on blind
faith.. They weren't impressed with the new CD...Matter of fact I had about
5 friends send the CD back to the label with a note attached.
They said they will preview before they buy her music again.

I am not impaired.. I don't agree with you ...and you can't stand
it..because not everyone worships Shania...

Yes, several have shown their cleavage...but, not as much as Shania has....
She is a sex symbol and she takes it to the bank... Her Feel Like a Women
video is bann in this house... as well as You don't Impress Me much...but
along with the video banns is .... Soon by Tanya... I love the song, the
video isn't allowed to be watched here...

Shania, doesn't perform music that I remember after she is done... I can
hear a song on the radio and I couldn't tell you what the lyrics were... I
can with Garth Brooks and tell you what the song was about.
(for me that is something... just ask around in here)

That should tell you ... if I don't remember the lyrics or the what the song
was about...then Shania isn't doing her job.... That is the kind of music
she puts out... She only put out a few songs..that has stuck with me.. The
Woman In Me... Home Is Where The Heart Is... From This Moment... (but, that
isn't enough for me to run out and buy her CD)

Do you understand what I am saying.... In my opinion and several others
here ... her music... her tongue and cheek songs ... don't stick with
several of us... and I love a great tongue and cheek song.

For your information...None of the radio stations sponsored her tour here
...

What ONLY big names are allowed to perform with Shania ??
because that is what you basically said....
Your quote:

>The only other country artists popular enough to share the stage with
Shania
>already get their own TV specials.

umm, then that tells me... Shania isn't interested in helping others ...if
they can't help her... that tells me she is self center and all she cares
about is her career only !!

Garth is bigger than that... he has enough self confidence up to bring on
people like Victoria Shaw.. Ty England... Trisha Yearwood and Martina
McBride...when they were no bodies... he didn't hesitate to have Victoria
Shaw open for him at Central Park.... a show that had a larger audience than
Shania ever can dream about....

This is exactly my point. You have to refer to 'ONE' specific instance
of over-exposure with various female artists in country music. However,
you have a multitude of times to choose from as far as Shania is
concerned.

Besides, here's the difference between Reba and Shania. After Reba's
performance in 'the' red dress, she immediately had Sandi Spika add
sequins to it. After Shania's performance on the Grammys, she
immediately released an entire video in the same outfit.

I can stand you disagreeing with me just fine. I defend Shania because I like
her music. You trash her because you don't like her music. I think anyone who
worships Shania, or any other artist, has problems anyway. Shania isn't even

It might be close. Michael Jackson comes to mind. Over twenty
million copies of "Thriller" sold, and seemingly everywhere at
once. Then overexposure and his freakish personal life gave his
career quite a hit. There's also the Bee Gees, who got slammed
careerwise during the great disco backlash.

From the story's Reba told.. She got her butt chewed on by momma pretty hard
over that one and she vowed to try all clothes on before she wears them
anywhere..... She didn't realize how revealing that dress was... matter of
fact, She said Narvel asked her if it was on backwards... She didn't know
what she was talking about until she got out to better lighting and then
realized ...and then it was to late...She learned from her mistakes....
Reba, is a classy dresser..... and has named that many of times.

Dolly didn't see her on the Oscars... I don't watch the Oscars.... so I
can't judge Dolly .

Tanya... don't know the story of the top and the press, but, I am sure we
can ask someone here that knows the story and can tell us what was going
on....

Shania's dress.... at the Grammy's was slutty .. What made that dress so bad
was Shania.... the way she stood in it and the way she moved in it... Only
reason I know is.. I have a friend that tapes the Grammy's every year ... So
I went to her home and watched the tape and I was offended... Then she
released a video with the same dress and the movements weren't much
better... The video is ban in this home for good reason !

For you information .. I know Shania was covered up at the ACM's that is why
I said.. I was shocked to see her dressed.

You say you work at Billboard... exactly what do you do there ??

God, you act like she pulled a Sharon Stone in "Basic Instinct." I promise
you, CMT would not be playing a video in which you could see the Shania vagina,
regardless of how many requests it got.

No. That's why I sold back my Dixie Chicks CD. I guess their success is
irrelevant too because somebody didn't like the CD.

You are very welcome. And if Shania's shoving her crotch in the camera,
somebody please tell me so I can get a tape ready. Because ultra-conservative
CMT would definitely put crotch-shots into heavy rotation.

A woman standing in front of a microphone singing. Kinda hard to be slutty
when you don't have physical contact with anybody else in a video.

That was the story the tabloids told. Reba countered it in her autobiography,
saying that all her Mom says was "I think that dress needs more sequins."

>She learned from her mistakes....
>Reba, is a classy dresser..... and has named that many of times.

I never said she wasn't. I just said she shows a lot of cleavage. I don't
find anything wrong with that. Her video "Forever Love" was on last night, and
there were quite a few aerial shots of her chest. Not to be tactless, but she
is top-heavy and it adds to her figure quite nicely.

It's a simple story. She got drunk and flashed her breasts at Capitol's CRS
party.

Not in ours. It's both my mother and father's favorite video out right now.
Mine is Madonna's "Nothing Really Matters."

Actually this video is a parody from another more famous video
"Simply Irresistable" from back in the 80's if my memory is correct
by Robert Palmer? I just saw the video for the first time
yesterday and got a good laugh out of it which I believe was the
intent of the video. I must give it to Shania on some of her recent
videos, someone is being very creative in her camp.

Still didn't make me enjoy the song any more though. Which I guess
is the point of this thread. I guess there may be some people out
there who make their music selections based on videos they see but
I'd have a hard time believing that is true of the average music
buyer. If I don't care for the music, no amount of flash or
marketing is going to get me to buy it.

Shania's used the same director for the clips "That Don't Impress Me Much,"
"From This Moment On" and "Man! I Feel Like A Woman!" I think his name is Paul
Boyd. He's got a great vision for her. She keeps presenting a new look with
each clip.

Yes, they are wonderful. In each video we are presented with a "new look," yet
the real Shania shines through in all of them. I just can't wait to see what's

Kev, I have a feeling Shania has worn mini skirts before ... we just haven't
seen them in her... A lady knows how to act in different things... I dont'
wear mini skirts but once or twice a year... and believe me ... I know how

Shania had to be talked into wearing the skirt because she hates her legs.
She's said this in several interviews. The dress was designed for the video
because the song refers to "short skirts." Shania said after the Grammys that
she was happy everyone said she looked great, but she was still uncomfortable
wearing the skirt.

That's your choice as a parent. If Shania bothers you though, you better lock
out MTV on your TV.

As a parent and grandparent, I endorse your control of TV, for your children,
completely. I would not turn on MTV for a nine-year old either. I can't bear
Jerry Springer, myself. While we don't agree on certain specifics (the Man!
video), I understand that anyone attempting to filter out what might be
objectionable for their children will reach varying opinions in certain areas.
Keep doing a good job raising your children.

thank you !!!

I guess, what bothers me about this entire discussion... Is the fact that I

switch it when it is.. Its a shame, that I can't trust CMT or Shania at this

answer is .. She is the most requested artist... what happen to family
television, for years the owners of CMT and TNN had prouded themselves to be
TV that our children can watch.. Now, that isn't happening any longer....

I love the fact that I could take my children to country shows... so many
artist ... have kids and they base their show pride that you can bring your
children to...

But, I don't feel a Shania show is a place for my 9 year old ....

I am proud, I have been able to take my daughter whom now is 12 to Clint
Black, George Strait and Aaron Tippin and I never once had to worry about
the show ....

My battle with her is over rap music now and believe me that is a fight in a

If you don't want to turn off CMT entirely, you can check their progamming
schedule to find when the Shania videos are on. I use this to figure out when
to watch, but you can use it to figure out when not to watch.

Do you turn off "Independence Day" also? I would think that would be a lot more
troublesome for a child to see than a Shania video. You have the right to
prevent your child from seeing something, but my little cousins don't seem to
be harmed by Shania. I would think a woman in a miniskirt would be the last
thing a parent had to worry about in 1999.

Shania puts on incredibly clean shows. She has local high school choirs
singing with her, and brings a local child who wins a contest up to sing "What
Made You Say That" by themselves every show. She doesn't wear that miniskirt
at her concerts either. LOL! But since you don't like Shania anyway, why are
you complaining that you couldn't take your children to her show?

Rap is very hard for parents to understand. I never really listened to it
until my best friend exposed me to it, and now I like some artists, like Eminem
and Lauryn Hill. It's hard for parents, though, because while Hill's music has
a powerful message that young girls could learn a lot from, other artists, like
Eminem, should not reach the ears of kids.

My children are aware of abuse... sex and drugs... they can't be in todays
world.... I am a child advocate of children that have been sexually
abused.... and a victims advocate, I mainly deal with the victims
families... after a murder.... My kids know...

I don't feel my 9 year old need to see her make suggestive moves or her
cleavage... I do my damnedest to make sure, I can raise all 3 with values
and morals....

Most have a problem with this and the ones that do ...are the ones that
don't have a clue how to raise kids... only way you know about raising
children is by having children... nephews, nieces and cousins don't
count....

My children know what is right and wrong .. I have busted my ass to teach
them..but, I will not know if had gotten through their heads until they are
grown and raising their own family ....

You dont' need to worry about what I am worrying about .. in teaching my

... maybe you would understand..but then again.. you probly aren't a parent
