Unfortunately, he was an alcoholic who died from alcohol poisoning on a binge
supposedly brought on from depression from his wife's leaving on tour.

Sit down and take a few deep breaths, Joanne!
Lorrie's not to blame for his drinking. He was doing it before they met. Just
ask Kathy Whitley, his first wife. I did.
Everyone knows Keith was a chronic alcoholic.
Shoot, they had to hide any aftershave, cologne, and/or anythig that had
alcohol in it. He drank it.
Lorrie and his manager put him on a plane to a dry-out clinic and he stayed
about a month, participated as he should, and when he walked off the plane in
Nashville ....he was drunker than all get out! He couldn't be helped, because
he didn't want help. Lorrie even tied his leg to hers in the bed so she could
feel if he tried to sneak out of bed in the night to go drink.
So, no...he didn't go on his drinking binge because Lorrie was on tour. He
probably counted days til she left so he could start drinking again.
Lorrie, bless her heart, tried every thing she could...over and over. Keith
was so damn talented, and so many people loved him and his songs...but he was
terribly addicted. Such a huge, huge waste.

I'm not blaming her for his death. Lorrie herself stated that she
tried to get out of going on tour because she was afraid of what would
happen. The fact is that he had a disease called alcoholism and he
died from it. Nothing romantic about it.
