North to Alaska-
We're goin north,
the rush is on.

(repeat)

Big Sam left Seattle in the year on 92.
With George Pratt his partner and brother Billy too.
They crossed the Yukon River and found the bonanza gold, below that old
white mountain,
just a little south-east of Nome.
Sam crosse the majestic mounians to the valleys far below.
He talked to his team of huskies as he mushed on through the snow.
With the northern lights a runnin wild in the land of the midnite sun.
Yeah, Sam ? was a mighty man in the year of nineteen-one.

Where the river is windin
big nuggets they're findin
Chorus 3x

George turned to Sam with his gold in his hand,
said, "Sam you're lookin at a lonely, lonely man."
"I'd trade all the gold that's buried in this land
for one small band of gold to place on sweet little Jenny's hand.
Cause a man needs a woman to love him all the time,
remember Sam a true love is so hard to find.
I'd build for my Jenny a honeymoon home,
below that old white mountain, just a little south-east of Nome.

Where the river is windin
big nuggets they're findin
Chorus 2x

The only thing I can't understand from the CD is Sam's last name. Maybe
someone else knows it. It spounds like Mcsomething....

I'll do my best here. I just pulled out the CD.

Speaking of that....

Does anyone know what inspired Johhny and Tillman Franks to write this
song. It's sounds like they at least knew a little about Alaska.
Plus, he had the song called "When Its Springtime In Alaska" that
Tillman Franks wrote.

I love both of those songs but I guess I'm biased since Alaska is my
homestate. Also, Neal McCoy's new video for "Then You Can Tell Me
Goodbye" was filmed up there.

His name is Sam McCord.

Interestingly, there is another version of North To Alaska called Go
North. It is included on the Bear Family box set for Johnny Horton.
There are two flavours of the song, one acoustic and one with
background vocals. It contains another verse, something like.

It took mighty men like Sam McCord to tame a troubled town like Nome
They'd stand up to a grizzly bear and put him in his place
Was so tough in Nome Alaska that canary birds sang bass.

It was written for the movie North To Alaska starring John Wayne,
Fabian, Stewart Granger and Ernie Knovaks.

There is actually two versions of the song available on the Bear
Family box set. The other version has an extra version and Johnny
sings it acousticly.
