I was just watching CMT, and a video came on by a guy named Elbert West
singing a song called "Diddley." This guy reminds me of a young Mickey
Gilley, and his music sounds like that as well. Plus the video is filled
with pretty girls, and that's never a problem. But this guy looks like a
character, and I imagine a lot of the people who are looking for country the
way it was about 25 years ago might like this guy.

Broken Bow Records Signs New Artist Elbert West

NASHVILLE, Tenn., Feb. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Benny Brown, owner and president of
Broken Bow Records has inked a deal with singer/songwriter Elbert West, a
veteran writer with previous success penning two #1 hits for Tracy Lawrence,
``Sticks and Stones'' and ``Can't Break It To My Heart.'' Broken Bow Records
will be releasing West's debut album ``Living The Life'' in May.
``We are looking forward to the release of Elbert's album,'' said Chris Neese,
vice president of A&R at Broken Bow Records. ``Elbert's music is going to fill
a gap that country music has been missing.''
West's longtime friend and co-writer on several of the albums cuts, Scott
Miller produced ``Living The Life.'' The album is entirely autobiographical.
West wrote most of the cuts, with the exception of the first cut ``Diddley''
and two other songs written by Miller. ``Diddley'' was written by C.B. Carter
and Doc James as a tribute to Elbert West the person. ``The song is about not
being afraid to dance, whether its right or wrong, however, it also speaks of
living life uninhibited and without fear,'' said West. ``It should inspire
people to be themselves and follow their dreams, no matter how much opposition
they may face, at least that's what the song says to me.''
West is no stranger the music industry, with his previous hits as a writer and
an extensive background in Nashville he speaks candidly about the challenges of
music row. ``I'd given up on the opportunity to make a country record. There
just didn't seem to be a place for my music in Nashville, so I took it on the
road. I played live at honky tonks and fairs, wherever I could to get it to the
people,'' said West. ``Then I got a call from Chris at Broken Bow, they wanted
me to make a record. He told me Broken Bow had a vision. They saw my kind of
country and its potential to appeal to the masses and better yet, they were
willing to roll the dice. I am excited about the release of this album and hope
that the people will hear the message and relate to my songs.''

Either PRNewswire got it wrong ... or it's wrong on his website page about
the song:

http://www.elbertwest.com/cutbycuts/diddley.html

Because the above listed site lists "Doc" Shapiro and C.B. Carter as the
writers.

Unless ... of course ... "Doc" Shapiro is James Shapiro ... which might be
where the difference comes in ... but, I don't know too many Shapiros with
the first name James. ;- )
