Could anyone please ID this song about a woman whose mother
sold her into prostitution after they became financially desperate?
The only lines I remember are, "Here's your one chance Nancy Don't
Let Me Down. . . I might have been born plain white trash but my
name isn't Nancy"

Thanks in Advance,
Vijay

Well you are close but not close enough. The song you are asking about is
called "Fancy". Reba McEntire redid it a few years ago. I don't recall
who did it first.
The last line should read, I might have been born plain white trash but
my name is Fancy.

You're a little closer, but the last line ends "Fancy was my name."

The song was written and originally recorded by Bobbie Gentry.

Correct, her name isn't Nancy; it's Fancy. In fact, the name of the song
is Fancy, originally done by Bobbie Gentry ("Ode To Billie Joe") in 1970.
Reba McEntire covered it on "For Her Broken Heart" (for some reason known
only to her).

Unless I missed some undoubtedly delightful bit of political
satire during the Reagan years, you're probably thinking about...

: "Fancy" by Reba McEntire

And by Bobbie Gentry, back when Reba was old enough to have perhaps
played it a few hundred times (alternating with "The Night The
Lights Went Out in Georgia" by Vicki Lawrence), but was otherwise
unheard from. Good candidate for the All-Insect Lyrics Quiz someday.
