I'm sitting in my office with the radio on a soft rock/pop station
(unfortunately I can't get any country stations from inside this
building). and the song "I Swear" has come on and I think it's
being sung a group called "Boys-2-Men". They also sing another
song that John Michael Montgomery sings (I can't, for the life of
me think of which one it is at this particular moment!) and I'm just
curious as to whether anyone knows the story. It's not terribly
unusual for a song to cross over and be sung by someone else, but I
thought that the same two songs by the same two artists was a little
strange. Anyone know anything?

Actually, the group is called "All-4-One"... They've recorded "I Swear"
and "I Can Love You Like That"... From what I can recall, the record
company allowed All-4-One to make their own versions of just those two
songs, and no more...

Anyone else know anything more?

It's sung by All 4 One, a clone of Boyz 2 Men. The other song is "I
Could Love You Like That." I guess it shows the strength of the song
that it can be a cross-over hjt. Now for that polka version....

I believe I've heard that All 4 One are big fans of John Michael Montgomery
and that he was one of their influential artists. I also recall reading in
a McDonald's newsletter (yup I worked there my Junior year of high school)
that the group all worked at McDonald's and would sing at work and that
they were "found" when somebody from the music industry stopped at the
McDonald's where they worked and heard them!

If I recall Baker and Myers (who wrote "I Swear") correctly, B2M made an
offer for the song first. Now that you mention it, it's somewhat remarkable
there aren't more of these, although it happens from time to time.
(Remember "Black Velvet"?). But one measure of a song's "greatness" is how
many people record or perform versions of it. "I Swear" was a great song.

I hadn't heard that the All-4-One were fans of John Michael. Just the
opposite! I'd heard that they made fun of his versions saying they "took
the twang" out of them and made them hits.

I heard the same thing, but I also heard that the guy who wrote the 2
songs actually contacted them to do a version. I had just started to
listen to country when the song first came out and hadn't heard JMM's
version of it yet so I only knew the one. Although I liked JMM's better,
I have to admit that All4One made it a huge hit.

Hi,
"I Swear" was written by Frank Myers and Gary Baker - the new singing duo
on MCG/Curb records -and they also wrote "Years From Here" that All-4-One
also sang. They wrote an additional verse for the second song for A-4-O.
Check out their CD, it's great!
Thanks,
Linda

Hi again,
I was partly wrong, Frank and Gary wrote an additional verse for "These
Arms" that All 4 One recorded. "Years From Here" was recorded by 4PM.
Thanks and sorry,
Linda

That is extremely hard to believe. Other than the fact that both
JMM and the lead singer of A4O have irritatingly whiny yet inexplicably
popular voices, JMM had no influence on their music at all. They
just happened to record the same songs (by the same writers).

I thought I read that the songwriters pitched it to both JMM and A4O
and both decided to pick it up, and that after "I Can Love You Like
That," A4O said they didn't plan to do another dual release, because
they didn't want that stigma--"oh, they're the guys who do the country
songs."

Yes. It is All-4-One; and yes they did do two of the same songs JMM
did.
(There have been several pop covers of recent country songs done lately
-- covers have been done of one each of Vince Gill's songs, John Berry's
and (I believe) Collin Raye's songs.) I don't know for certain, but I
heard that All-4-One actually recorded one of those songs before JMM
did. So I'm sure it's a "planned" cross-over by the record execs.
Wonder if they're both on the same record label?

I believe the deal is that the producer of the black pop groups that have
recorded JMM's stuff is heavily into country. I forget his name. The
whole thing takes me back to Ray Charles and Solomon Burke recording
country in the early 1960s.

In February, All-4-One is scheduled to release their cover of "Sold! (The
Grundy County Auction Incident)".

That's right! And Baker & Myers performed here last spring during their
radio tour. It was a wonderful session of "everybody try to wake up" and
made me really happy I didn't have to sing "A Little Bit of Honey" for a
living :)) Lots of fun, and someone asked them why they okayed a pop
release of it. As I recall, they said that pop grabbed it first.

But I have to admit, I'm stretching the limit of my memory here, and I
could be wrong.

This is kinda on the same subject. . .

Has anyone heard the pop versions of "Your Love Amazes Me" &
"Faithfully" (not the Journey song) both recorded by John Berry? And if
you have heard them, who is/are the pop artist/s?
Thanks..

Just curious,

Tara,
'The pop version of 'Your Love Amazes Me' is by former Contemporary
Christian artist Michael English. Actually the song is considered Adult
Contemporary.
