There is a report in today's edition of USA Today, that country
singer/songwriter Eddie Rabbitt has died. The article states that
"Rabbitt was diagnosed with lung cancer and had part of his left lung
removed last year." But, the article does not state whether the lung
cancer was the cause of his death.

May he rest in peace......

I heard it today...he died 2 days ago, was buried yesterday, and it was
announced today. Yes, it was lung cancer.

My heart goes out to his family...

We've posted a page about the life and death of Eddie Rabbitt at

Sadly, there are no other personal pages to be found on the net!

One thing that really amazed me visiting the South was the number of
smokers. It's like the surgeon general's report never made it below
the Mason-Dixon line. When I visited my wife's folks in Hot Springs
Arkansas, we were driving along a road in this very rural area and
suddenly came upon a magnificent edifice- it was the local cancer
center. We really have a different way of life in California. No
catfish swimming in thick oil (as we saw on the buffet of our motel),
no greasy fried foods in general, and, most important, very little
smoking. I'm not being smug, it's just a striking difference I
noticed between California and the South.

I just read Linda C.'s response to this thread. She has informed us that
Eddie Rabbitt was a cigarette smoker.

FYI: Lung cancer is not always associated with the carcinogen
(tobacco). There are other carcinogens besides tobacco that cause lung
cancer: abestos, radon, arsenic, air pollution and radiation exposure
can also result in lung cancer. But, the leading cause of lung cancer
is due to smoking cigarettes (tobacco).

Just a small fact here: Eddie Rabbitt was a Yankee...born in Brooklyn and
grew up in East Orange NJ. Cigarette smoking also tends to be higher among
women and minorities.

Hmmm ... what's the SOUTH have to do with anything??

Eddie was born in Brooklyn, NY (Yankee territory for sure ... though
there are Mets fans scattered about there too) ... 56 years ago ...
grew up in NEW JERSEY (west of NYC ... definitely not in the south)
.. and he smoked before he ever decided to take that bus ride to
Nashville.

BTW ... for those that don't know it ... for well over a decade (since
the death of his son Timmy) ... Eddie did his best to live a healthy
lifestyle ... changed his eatting habits, ran 10 miles a day, etc.

The man is dead ... let's just remember him as a kind and charitable
man who had the god-given gift of music.

Now that he's driven his life away, I hope he's found that better way.
God bless you and keep you Eddie!!

Eddie Rabbitt was lucky in that he was able to get out of East Orange,
NJ. The entire place has since gone to *pot*----literally!! Also, if I
am not mistaken, NJ has the highest incidences of cancer rates than any
other state.

It's not surprising when you consider that almost all tobacco in
this country is grown in just six states: Georgia, Kentucky, The
Carolinas, Tennessee, and Virginia. Tobacco is a huge cash crop in
the South and that strongly influences how people think about it.

I have family in the South and have lived in So Cal for nearly 30 years,
and I've noticed that, too. Only one out of six people in LA smoke, and
practically every enclosed area is non-smoking. In some tobacco-growing
states like NC and SC, it's hard to find a non-smoking area even in the
*airport.* I've found restaurants in some places in the South that have
*no* non-smoking areas. I can't eat in those places, because I'm
allergic and eating while I smell smoke is like eating while cleaning
the cat's litter box!
I was happy to notice that most enclosed areas in New Orleans were
non-smoking, but I was there on business and didn't make it to any
sleazy roadhouses (darn it!)

Your point is the best one yet in this thread, even though they've all made
sense. It's the fact that these are tobacco growing areas. One way to
protect your business, your livelihood, as a tobacco farmer is to buy it.

As a former Californian with all the smog and crap in the air out
there what difference would a few cigarettes make!
In our native American Heritage we bless our worship circle with
tobacco and thank the Great Spirit for it.
Think modern chemicals are much more the culprit. Also the great Tax
bonanza for the POTUS.I have much more concern about illegal substances
that the govt. amd do gooders ignore. When I left Calif coke was the
so called "beautiful peoples"drug of choice along with several
halucintorys, especially in the music industry.

Fearless Angel

I just lost someone to this disease. My sister. She smoked for a few years
in her twenties and gave it up completely. She ate well, exercised
regularly...well, the doctors told me that anyone who smokes even for a few
years and gives it up has a high probability of developing this disease.
Also they said anyone who lives in an industrialized city is "smoking" about
one pack of cigarettes a day anyway due to pollution. Also was told that
people who take certain medications for existing conditions have to be very
careful about drug interactions when combining with other drugs or chemicals
such as living in a home with "black mold" or having your house/apartment
fumigated on a regular basis. Most "zine"-ending drugs have a toxic effect
to the respiratory system when combined with pesticides, tolulene, etc;
We've become a drug dependent society (the prescribed kinds) and I think
this isn't so fortunate... might make our immune system degrade a bit. I'd
been a smoker for eighteen years...my mother for fifty years, my dad for
about the same...needless to say we all think we're immortal....until...
Anyway, had the pleasure of meeting Eddie once some years ago. I was just
early on in my twenties and thought he was so talented and so good looking.
Turns out he was so very friendly and kind and considerate and willing to
share a small space of his time with a "fan". I remember telling everyone I
knew I had shaken the hand of Eddie Rabbitt. Damn, we're really human
afterall. I hope your wings are gold, Eddie....please say hello to my
sister. I miss you both.

I neither smoke (never have) or use drugs. and I dont spend my life
bragging about being a "star fucker" or pushing my brand of I am god on
any one or being
an expert on all the universe.
You can not smoke. not eat fat fried food,(I m a vegeterian) and take a
bath some night and fall in the bath tub. When we are born there is also
a time set to die and we cannt change that.Men went thru war,the worst
battles and came home and were hit by a car.
cancer is also partly hereditary, there isa gene that seems to make some
people more prone to cancer.according to some research.

I smoke. I know it's awful for me. My father had lung cancer (he lost a lung,
but didn't die from it), which makes it very risky for me. If you add in the
fact that I am a cancer survivor myself (uterian), it makes it worse.

Though I've quit many times (once for 2 years), I always come back to it. Why?
Two reasons: stress and weight gain. The first time I quit, I gained 75
lbs!!! Lost it all when I started smoking again. Stress? The doctor
prescribed Klonapin. Do I want presption medicine? I'd rather have the
cigarettes, thank you. One habit seemed to be replaced with another.

Now I smoke a brand that contains no additives. Pure tobacco.
I've cut down from a pack and a half a day to a half a pack a day.
I've gained 8 lbs. in a month's time. Still, I'm trying.

It seems the worst ememy a smoker can have (especially the ones
who are trying to make up their minds to quit) are the "lecturers".
"Reformed" smokers are the worst! Do you people not know it turns us
completely the other way? I become very obstinate when lectured. Years back,
I sat next to a woman on a plane (I was in the "smoking section") who
apparently HAD to take the seat at the last minute. When I'd light up, she'd
immediately make a BIG deal out of coughing and fanning the air! I just smoked
more. It's like that when you listen to lectures on the evils of smoking.
You feel like you're being told what you HAVE to do.

When I do quit ( and I hope this time is the last!), I make it a point not to
lecture. If they ask for help, I try encourage....with a smile, and not a look
of disgust! And...I don't DWELL on it!

When I last talked to Eddie, he had a cigarette in his hand...and so did I. I
hate that it has to come to this to make me quit, but sometimes we have to have
cold water thrown in our face.
If you can't quit, you might want to try a cigarette that is 100% tobacco.
Maybe I won't be able to stop, but at least I've cut down and am not smoking
pesticides with my tobacco.!

I don't know a single person who has died from smog *or* bad sushi, or a
dive-by either. I do have a father with emphysema and watched my
chain-smoking aunt died from lung cancer at 40. Emphysema is an
especially horrible disease, since you basically die from lack of oxygen
(rather like drowning) but take years of misery to do it.

Don't play so wounded, Linda. You know what "star-fucker" means. It
means a person who pretends to be an authority because she constantly
drops her credentials as an entertainment journalist into newsgroups,
to intimidate others who are merely fans.

To call you a "star fucker" is the TRUTH, the whole truth, and nothing
