This is a song I heard Iris DeMent sing on Austin city limits.
Something like, "God may forgive you, but I won't. Yes, Jesus loves
you, but I don't..." It's not on either of her cd's. Does anyone know
of a recording of this song (by anyone) currently available?
Thanks - Laura

This is a Harlan Howard song, and Rosie Flores did a nice
version of it on her first (and self-titled) album, which was first
released on vinyl in 1987.

You're in luck: this album has just been re-released by Rounder
(as 'A Honky Tonk Reprise', Rounder 3136). So pick up a copy: to my
mind it's the best album that Rosie Flores has made so far.

Thanks,
Ian

I think.....but it's kind of fuzzy in my mind....maybe Lyle Lovett has
recorded this song. I.....just.....can't......remember......clearly.
QUICK....more coffee! ;-)
Really, I seem to remember seeing Lyle sing this at one of his Austin City
Limits appearances. Can somebody else help with the album?

Rosie Flores also sings it. It's on her album "A Honky Tonk Reprise"
on the Rounder label. It was written by Harlan Howard and Bobby
Braddock. It's called "God May Forgive You (But I Won't)".

I agree that this is just a great CD. It includes 10 songs from the
original CD plus 6 more that were previously unreleased. Pete
Anderson(Dwight Yoakam's guitarist/sidekick/producer) produced that
first album. I thought that song was also great.

This track was included on the Our Town CD single here in
the UK. Also included was Hearts Highway.

Sounds like the Lyle Lovett song "God Will" from his first album.
The chorus is something like, "God will but I won't, God does but I don't,
and that's the difference between God and me." Didn't know Iris Dement
sang it too but I'll bet she really put it over if she did.

No, these are 2 different songs.

Harlan Howard and Bobby Braddock wrote the song Iris Dement sang
on Austin City Limits. As far as I know, Rosie Flores is the
only singer to record it for an album.
