I just got into country music recenty due to listening and enjoying the 3
albums made by Shania Twain. I don't listen to country for the most part, but I
enjoy it now. Any suggestion on what country artists I would like and which CD
I should listen to.

My friends who liked the genre b/c of Shania ended up liking Alison, Patty,
Kathy, Trisha, Wynonna, etc.

My daughter has two country music heroes...Shania Twain and Tanya
Tucker. As it turns out, Tanya was apparently one of Shania's
influences. Tanya had a CD out in 2002, but you could check out any
of them really...they are all pretty good (especially compared to most
acts today).

You've got to be kidding, Linda; if you put together all the fans who were
turned on to country by those two, you might have enough to fill up a small
room somewhere. The way people get introduced to an unfamiliar genre is
typically by its most popular, crossover artists, not cult figures - which,
regrettably (at least in Watson's case; I've never cared much for Keen's
music, but that's a side matter) is an accurate description of those guys.
Furthermore, I suspect that Kevin's right - that is, that fans introduced to
the genre by Twain are more likely to gravitate to other female artists than
to the guys you mention. Not that I think there's anything wrong with Kenny
Chesney's music, myself <g>.

Actually, I think it's the influx of pop fans that has pushed Hee Haw
off the air. Back to my original point, fans brought into "country
music" by pop-country artists are more likely to get into other pop-type
acts rather than Haggard and Jones. Ironically, it was rock kids
rather than the country establishment that were responsible for the late
career resurgence of Johnny Cash.

That doesn't really mesh historically. The show went off the air at the peak
of the hat act movement, after being revamped because the hokey image wasn't
consistent with the upscale country image Music Row was pushing. That was the
Garth era, definitely pre-Shania and post-Urban Cowboy.

What are you basing this opinion on? First of all, Haggard and Jones are from
another era; you're not going to find them easily if it's Alan Jackson that's
drawn you to country music.
Second, you make the assumption that it is the pop in the pop-flavored country
that catches pop listeners attention. Isn't it possible that it's the country
element of that pop-flavored country that makes pop listeners think music can
get a whole lot more interesting? I know that's what happened to me. There's
nothing inherently country about "Maybe It Was Memphis." Arista was worried
about putting out that pop of a record, and even tried to get some top 40 play.
But it caught my attention when I was listening mostly to pop, and I haven't
looked back since.

Perhaps. I was introduced to Cash through "American Recordings" myself back in
1994, when I was in 9th grade. But it wasn't because he was doing grunge
covers. I read the 5-star review in New Country magazine and bought it on
their recommendation.

I was thinking about that as I watched the Johnny Cash tribute a few
weeks ago. One of the threads in that show was how his music didn't
necessarily fit cleanly into any genre. It was part country, part
rock, part folk, part Cash. That's what made him so unique and helped
him appeal to so many different people. And how he could influence
both rock and country artists. I think at some point people will say
that about Shania. (Not that she'd be equated with Cash, but that she
wasn't easily categorized). As you said, country is a large genre.
Not everyone has to sound like Ernest Tubb or any one single thing in
order to qualify. If there was room for Kenny Rogers and Alabama,
there's room for Shania Twain.

Listen to what you like. Old country or new, it doesn't matter. If
it's "pop country" (a la Shania, etc.), and you like it, who cares? I
happen to really like Keith Urban--if you took the banjo out, he could
be a pop star. So what?
I got started into country from a single song. I bought Garth Brooks'
"Scarecrow" just for the song 'Wrapped Up In You.' Then, I heard
'Beer Run' and I was hooked.
A suggestion--give Willie Nelson a try. First, he's more 'traditional
country'. Second, especially in his live CDs, he does a lot of duets,
and who knows--maybe one of those other artists will strike your
fancy.
Another suggestion...try some compilation CDs. Go to Best Buy/Circuit
City/whatever, and look in the "Various" area of the c&w section.
Again, a particular artist may suit your fancy.
Last suggestion--don't let anyone tell you what you *shouldn't* listen
to. Opinions are like belly buttons...everyone has one. Do what
suits you.

I didn't really realize that this thread was going to beome a thread that
disputes if Shania is really "country" or not. I bought "Come On Over" a few
years back, due partly to getting to know her after seeing her on VH1. She had
some catchy songs, I then listened to her other songs, and to my surprise I
like a number of them. I then bought "Up". It wasn't as good as "Come on Over",
but I liked a number of songs in it as well like "It only hurts when I"m
Breathing"" and "Forever and for Always" Anyways, I then got "The Woman in Me"
CD afterwards.
I've been listening to some country music samples on websites and stuff, and
even bought the Dixie Chicks "Home" CD. Its cool. I like it. Not as good as
Shania's, but a satisfying CD.
Well thats my 2 cents I guess ..

And I find it interesting that a rock/rap producer would revive the
career of a legend that Nashville had sent out to pasture. I wish a few
others would "adopt" the ones that are still around.

Agreed. I wonder why a few of the country veterans can't carve out a niche
similar to the rockers of the '70's that are doing standards: Rod Stewart,
Bobby Caldwell, Boz Scaggs, Cindi Lauper, all ala Ronstadt. I'd like to
hear some of the great country hits of the '60's and '70's redone, in their
own fashion by Connie Smith, Norma Jean, Shelly West, the Oaks, Jones, Vern
Gosden (if he's up to it), Gene Watson, John Conlee, Don Williams, Moe & Joe
(separately please).
BTW, I understand Johnny Tillotson will be releasing an album of standards
later this year. I'm looking forward to that.

You have a short memory. Need I remind you about "Convoy?" How about
"Do Wacka Do?" How about all the schlock country-politan? It's been
watered down and dumbed down since it began. It didn't just start ten
years ago. One of the most revered figures in country music was the
epitome of "dumbed down." But Minnie Pearl's fans just called her
"down home." Don't put a tuxedo on country music. It is what it is.
That's part of its appeal.

Would they be willing to make the kind of music Cash made? Not many
can do it with any integrity. Merle did one album for a rock label,
and he didn't seem too happy with it. Personally, I think a lot of
these "legends" would love to be "adopted" if it means they make a lot
of money. But they're not willing to change their music or anything
else in order to do it. Which is why it doesn't happen. Can you
imagine Porter Wagoner doing "Hurt?" In his rhinestone suit? Or Jim
Ed Brown?

Some have. There's not much difference between 40s pop and 60s
countrypolitan. At times Mel Tillis can sound just like Mel Torme.
But in my opinion having Gene Watson sing Gershwin isn't much better
than Faith Hill singing Diane Warren. Especially if they're both
over-produced with a full orchestra. Linda doesn't like her music
watered down.

I've mentioned Dallas Wayne in here more than probably anyone else has. GREAT
voice, with some good songs, but IMHO, seems to overdue to slow ballads, and
needs more consistency. Definitely better than Watson, but still needs better
songs.
Secondly, these guys have to understand, that even Merle Haggard and Alan
Jackson don't write every single one of THEIR songs!
Nobody is THAT prolific. :) And if you're getting others, from the local hero,
the bus driver's cousin, etc. you're committing career suicide.
In order to get noticed, you have to give people their money's worth, and two
or three songs, for $16, ain't gonna do it.
All these people talk about their love of the genre, and never pay it back, by
recording some of it's GREAT songs!
I don't want to hear a great voice like George Jones sing a boatload of crap,
so I damn sure don't want to hear the local flavor of the week do it!
Why not limit yourselves to a handful of your own songs, for a couple of
possible singles, and 8 of your favorites by others? A couple of shuffles, a
Hank Williams standard, a Lefty weeper, etc. etc, etc.
You say you don't care about radio play, so why in the hell do you keep
recording potential singles? Is it because you're surrounded by "yes" men, who
tell you how wonderful your songs are? They're NOT! Nashville told you the
truth, the problem is you don't want to believe it.
Don't go through life with that chip on your shoulder, you can't see behind
you! :) Take a page from people like Suzy Bogguss, Sara Evans, Danni Leigh,
Heather Myles, Ricky Van Shelton, Alan Jackson, George Strait, and your own
compadres Asleep At The Wheel & Don Walser, and just about ANY successful
traditional artist: (Here's a free tip:)

Almost every one of the above artists, covered some of the old standards,
almost immediately, and almost immediately got noticed.
WAKE UP! This isn't rocket science, it's economics!
How many original songs did Don Walser record? LOL!!!!! Then he threw on a ton
of "covers", and you've got a nice listen anytime you want to. It's worth $16!
On the other hand, Dale Watson gives me 12
"originals", and I've got a nice table coaster. :)

Not true.
Alan got a ton of publicity, when he stuck up for Jones on that award show, and
sang his song.
Additionally, he's done two or three songs with George Jones, and he's recorded
at least a half dozen songs made famous by George Jones and Merle Haggard.
The truth is, if you're a fan of Alan Jackson, it would be almost impossible
not to find Haggard & Jones.
Stop listening to crap. Pick up some of his cds! :)

about music outside of Texas? We have the HOTTEST country music scene
anywhere on the planet. Texas is the largest market for country music
and has the BEST country music right here in the Lone Star state.

hey, everyone is different. If you like Shania and the Chicks, you
might want to give Allison Krauss a try. She's bluegrass (side
note--I understand the basic difference betw. c/w and bluegrass to be
that b/g doesn't use drums, and generally relies on steel guitar
more...but I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong (C;).
I don't know if you have CMT or GAC on cable in your area, but you may
want to take a look at those--GAC is preferrable, as CMT tends to play
the same videos over and over and over and over and...well, you get
the drift.
Having said that about CMT, you should check their web site: CMT.com.
They have a "CMT Radio" feature, where you can do streaming audio of
various country styles.
One last thing--I was reading other posts in this thread, and I echo
the sentiments of another poster...welcome to the wonderful world of

There is one amusing side to these faux-country acts - their silly
little fans. The CMT message boards are always good for laughs when the
subject is an act that attracts dippy chicks. The Joe Nichols fans are
all upset because he's dating a bleached blonde Playmate who used to be
one of Hef's girls and the Keith Urban groupies are living in fear that
he'll marry model Niki Taylor. And of course there are always the
nutbags who call the Chicks and their fans Commies. About once a week,
someone drops into the Hank Jr. board to ask if Kid Rock is really his

he should at least be availing himself of some intelligent reading material, if
for no other reason, than to help improve his craft, which by all indications,
he sems to care deeply about.
