One of my favorite Bay Area bands, Charming Hostess, performs a
fabulous version of this song live. And they ain't country.
al
Nick Cave covers it, and Johnny Cash. Bob Dylan's performed it in concert.
It's a great, great song. (Jagger really rose to the occasion with the
Chieftains.)

Here's to admitting that I am a TOTAL nerd on the internet:
I like Burl Ives' version. :)
Jeannie
I like Marty Stuart's.
Linda C.
My vote for 2nd best version would have to go to Rick Danko of the
Band, when the Band did it. First best would be Johnny Cash.

Dave Matthews and Emmylou Harris did a nice version on the Johnny Cash tribute
show that aired a few years ago.
I wonder if they will be reprising that on the JC tribute album currently in
the works...?

Okay, you're right. Johnny Cash is the correct answer.

Not for nothing, but Dave Matthews sucks.

John Anderson did a pretty good version on his
"Wild & Blue" album and even had Merle sing
one of the choruses...very tasteful.

That's what Morpheus/Gnutella/bearshare are for.

Not as much as you do.

I've only heard the Johnny Cash version, and it is simply one of the
most beautiful & haunting songs I've ever heard, and I fuckin' HATE
C&W! Now that I'n getting broadband internet access this Monday, I'll
have to check out the Chieftians rendition in the MP3 groups, where I
recently saw it posted. Before when I had 56K dial-up (actually I
*still* have it until the day after tomorrow) I was forced to be very
selective in what I downloaded -- took me hours & hours to download a
single friggin' CD. Now I'm gonna cut loose & get all sorts of crazy
shit I'm not too familiar with but have heard good things about. :-Þ
