That wouldn't make him a shallow person, now would it?
is this john hiatt's "angel eyes", or a new lovett song?
Actress Julia Roberts and singer Lyle Lovett have tied the knot. The
two were married in a hastily planned wedding held in a church in
Marion, Indiana. A few hours after the wedding.. Lovett and his band
performed a concert in an Indianapolis suburb. To the surprise of the
audience... Roberts walked on stage in her wedding gown and introduced
her new husband and his band. The two met when they were filming ``The
Player.'' It's the first marriage for both.

Actually, the ceremony was in Indiana, where his tour happened to be at the
time. She flew in from Washington DC, where she's filming a movie.
>Lovett's band performed "Angel Eyes" in honor of the actress during the
In a "Texas Monthly" article on Lovett, he said that one night, at dinner,
his girlfriend asked him why he never wrote a song about her. He grabbed
a napkin and wrote, "She's got big red lips, she's got big brown eyes./When
she treats me right, it's a big surprise." Julia's got the big red lips,
alright; what color are her eyes?

I dunno. I was kinda disappointed, myself. She has a tendency to fall
for her leading men, from what I hear. I just hope it works out.
On a related note, when Lyle was on Late Night a couple of weeks ago,
he sang "I've been to Kansas." He changed the line "Allison's got
little ones/what hate to go to school" to "Fiona's got little..." He
also did this in concert here the following week (don't miss it, BTW,
the boy and his band played 2.5 hours, following 1 hour of Roseanne
Cash), and mentioned that Fiona had asked him to do some other particular
song. I figured it was his girlfriend's name. Could it be some sort
of nickname for Julia?

Sounds like he was changing a name that wasn't Julia to another name
that wasn't Julia so that he could talk about Julia without people
knowing. Either that, or there's someone else (mother, niece, etc.)
named Fiona to whom he's referring.
But I digress. The really important question is: does _anyone_ know
the name of the cellist touring in the Large Band currently? The guy
is amazing, and I'd love to find out if he's recorded elsewhere.
Thanks for any tips you can provide.

You were dozing off, Stephen -- my review of Lyle's show here a week
and a half ago spent no small amount of time praising John Hagen's
solo work (and his duet with the drummer, who played barehanded during
that segment). I don't have anywhere near the Austin collection I'd
like to have, but here's what my HyperCard stack tells me Hagen's done
in the last decade or so that I've found:
Tommy Elskes King of Dixie Amazing
Alejandro Escovedo Gravity Watermelon
Emily Kaitz What You See Is What You Get self-released
Shoulders Hungry Man's Dance self-released
Shoulders Love Is My Crime self-released
Two Nice Girls Chloe Liked Olivia Rough Trade
Susan Voelz 13 Ribs self-released
On this list, I'd particularly recommend Susan Voelz' 13 Ribs (which
an indie just rereleased; afraid I can't remember which), Escovedo's
Gravity, and the two Shoulders releases. If I remember correctly, Hagen
plays with Shoulders when he isn't touring with Lovett (I know I've
seen him with Shoulders, though on New Year's Eve '89-'90). Voelz and
Escovedo's releases are much in the style in which Hagen soloed during
Lyle's show, while Shoulders is Austin's top alternative band (almost
always voted #1 in any category they qualify for) and a real treat.
Escovedo's release should be available pretty readily; Watermelon gets
good distribution. The others, if they're available at all (the two
Shoulders tapes go back a few years), are probably best found at Austin's
Waterloo Records, (512) 474-2500.

Tim, I love you! Haven't laughed that much in days (been a bad week).

According to the newspaper, Fiona is Julia Roberts' middle name, and Lyle
used it to avoid media attention.
