Hi,
For those of you in northern California, I'm getting an itch to hit
the road and find a good honky tonk somewhere along the way.

I'm not talking about just a c&w dance place -- I spend plenty of
time at In Cahoots in Sacramento and the SaddleRack in San Jose.
I'm talking more about the "real" brand of Honky Tonk (tm).
(Although, I do think the SaddleRack is pretty authentic). You
know, outskirts of a small town, live band, hardwood floor, nothing
but folding chairs, Wranglers, and good times. Oh, and *NO*
Samuel Adams or Zima (zimply ztupid) on tap!!

Please comment on any such place you've been to or seen in California
north of SLO/Fresno. NW Nevada or southern Oregon might be do-able,
as well.

If I could combine the visit with a trip to a county fair or
something that would be doubly great!

Thanks!
Trevor

A couple of places come to mind. In Vallejo, there's Josey Wales, which was
around long before the "new country" craze began. Off I-80, take the Marine
World Pkwy. exit, go past Marine World and keep following the same road
past several signals. Josey Wales will be on your right, just past the
highway that leads to Napa (sorry, I can't remember the exact address).

In Hayward, there's the West 40. Take I-880 to Hayward and exit at A
Street. Go west on A Street a couple of blocks, and the West 40 will be on
your right, just before Hesperian Blvd.

In the south part (Warm Springs district) of Fremont, there's a bar called
the South 40, but I've never been there so I don't know what it's like.

These are the only "honky tonks" that I can think of, at least in the East
Bay area. If you're trying to avoid Zima, stay away from Denim & Diamonds
and Cadillac Ranch. There are also several dance halls in the Bay Area that
put on c&w dances, but if you're looking for a regular "c&w bar"
environment, the places listed above would be a good starting point.

I recommend the Twin Oaks Tavern in Penngrove, CA (just north of Petaluma
near Hwy 101). Music on Friday and Saturday nights, 9-1:30

Anyone in Northern California around Oakland want to check out some of
these Northern California, Honky Tonks. I just recently signed onto this
bulletin board, live in Oakland, and haven't been to most of these places
-- just Denim and Dimonds, Freight and Salvage, Rawhide, and maybe one or
two others. I'd like to start going around to these places, and thought
it would be fun to go with some people in the area. E-mail me at GiniS
c/o AOL or G.SCOTT3 at GEnie.
