This is not an old-time song, but lots of folks with ties to old-time
have done it. I'm curious who learned it from what recordings, etc.,
and what was the original, seminal recording, if there was one.

I think the first time I heard it was at the Mt. Airy fiddlers
convention, 1993 or '94. Can anyone add any more information or
recollections?

Here are some of the (possibly) older recordings -- I couldn't find the
release dates of all of them.
Vulcan's Britches -- they're from Alabama, as is Walt Aldridge, the
guy who wrote the song.
Alice Gerrard --
Ranch Romance -- 1993
Renegades -- 199?
-- there are others, but they are more recent.

Alice's version is on "Pieces of My Heart," Copper Creek CD 0134,
copyright 1994. I'd argue that it IS an old-time song, but a young
one. I'm tempted to learn it every time I listen to it, which means it
has an old-time heart (appealing to an old-time fart).

konnichiwa-
I guess this song is written by a Nashville singersong writer Walt Aldridge.

And it's a great singing waltz for dances.

Lyle-

I can't really contribute to the thread here but I just have to ask you to
never stop posting to the group! You've been entertaining me (counting the
fine Brandy Snifters' cuts on that classic "Stringband Project") for decades
now. Ever clever and informative. What a smooth combination. You 'da man!

I'm not sure I've ever heard a recording of it. I learned it from
Susie Crate around 1983 or '84 (or '85) when she was visiting
Bloomington, Indiana. She learned it back home in Chapel Hill from
someone who learned it from whoever made it up. I don't think it had
yet been waxed or magnetized or laser-dyed (or whatever it is they do
to make CDs). Some people likes it. Some people don't. I'm both of
those.
