I haven't sent out my playlists in a few weeks. Holidays, etc. Anyways,
here is today's playlist at my new time of 1-3pm, still on Sunday. I lost
an hour but I am now later in the day which lends itself better to live
musicians, a more conscious audience, and me being awake.
Not much oldtime stringband music this week. Too much music, too little time.

[Comments]
Mac Benford and the Woodshed Allstars/Hangman's
Reel/Old Time Music on the Air, Vol 1/Rounder
[Topsoil theme song]
Cordelia's Dad/May Blooming Field/Comet/Omnium
[I'd been discussing some traditional ballads with
friends recently which really got me in the mood to
hear some of these old songs. As you can see I
started off my shift with quite a few of them.]
Rick Lee/Lady Margaret/Natick/Waterbug
Helen Bonchek Schneyer/The Cruel Mother/Somber, Sacred &
Silly/Straight Arrow
[This is one of the spookiest deliveries to one of
the spookiest traditional ballads. Chills a-plenty.]
Jerry Epstein/Fair Annie/Time Has Made a Change in Me/
Minstrel
[A great cd of old ballads.]
Phil Cooper and Margaret Nelson/Long Lankin/The Only Dance
We Know/Cooper and Nelson
[This murder ballad was a favorite of Phil's
elementary school students when he was a substitute
teacher.]
Nic Jones/Canadee-i-o/Troubadours of British Folk, Vol 3/
Rhino
[I started out this set with another traditional
ballad, but then headed into some songs and tunes
about the sea.]
Steady as She Goes/Strike the Bell/Steady as She Goes/
Collector
[A great album of sea shanites re-released a few years
ago. Features Jeff Warner and Gerrett Warner, Louis
Killen and Fud Benson.]
Ken Perlman/Northside Tunnel-Over the Briny Ocean/Island
Boy/Wizmak
[Tunes from Prince Edward Island played on clawhammer
banjo and fingerstyle guitar.]
Battlefield Band/In and Out the Harbour-The Top Tier-
Sleepy Maggie-Molly Rankin/Threads/Temple
Popcorn Behavior/Julia Delaney's-Vladmir Steamboat/Hot
Contra Dance Tunes/AMMUS
[The machine ate this tape. It's official, I've worn
this darn thing out. I can't even tell you how many
times I've listened to this tape. It's amazing from
start to finish, especially if you like Celtic,
American or Contradance music.]
Martin Hayes/Bony Crossing the Alps-The Maids of Feakle/
Under the Moon/Green Linnet
Jerry Holland/Sheehan's Reel-The Flowers of Edinburgh-Miss
McLeod's Reel/Fiddlesticks Recordings/Green Linnet
[If anyone could tell me more about any other
available recordings from Jerry Holland. This cd is
absolutely perfect. I'm greedy, though, and I want
more.]
Pogues/Kitty/Red Roses For Me/Pogue Mahone
[A beautiful version of this traditional song.]
Merriweather/Elzick's Farewell/The Wren's Dilemma/
Widdershins
[Hammered dulcimer is featured heavily on this cd and
it doesn't sound like New Age! Hallelujah! I like
this quite a bit.]
Freight Hoppers/Johnson Boys/Where'd You Come From.../
Rounder
[Played in town a week or so ago. It was fabulous.]
Hollow Rock String Band/Betty Likens/Young Fogies/Rounder
[Features Alan Jabbour on fiddle from the Library of
Congress.]
Ill-MO Boys/Valely Forge/Marimac Anthology/Marimac-Rounder
[Would love to hear a cd from these guys some day.]
Mike Seeger with Tim O'Brien/Leaving Tennessee/3rd Annual
Farewell Reunion/Rounder
Drovers/Southern Crescent/Sunday at Prater's Creek/
Fundamental
[Bass player for this band is in Six String Drag.
They play oldtime bluegrass music here. Sometimes
though they play up the hillbilly schtick, which
bothers me. I'm not into blacked out teeth and
junk like that.]
Fred Price, Doc Watson and Clint Howard/Rank Stranger/Old
Timey Concert/Vanguard
[A song I really like that the Stanley Brothers do.]
Doc Watson/Down in the Valley to Pray/Vanguard Years/

[Could you ever hear three guitarists as great as this
in one place again?]
Norman and Nancy Blake/Mr. Garfield/Just Gimmie Something
I'm Used To/Shanachie
[A funny song about Charles Guiteau. Norman is
playing in town on Jan 10th.]
Beacon Hillbillies/Omie Wise/Songs of Love and Murder/
