Anybody have lyrics to this song, or know where I might be able to locate
them? Would appreciate any help.

"We are just plain folks, your Mother and Me. Just plain folks. Like your own
folks used to be. Since our presence seems to grieve you. We will go away and
leave you. For we're sadly out of place here. 'cause we're just plain folks.

Sorry, if this is the song you are refering to, that's all of it I remember. I
used to hear it on the opry in the 40's. I think Bradley Kincaid did it.

Dave , is this what you're looking for? It's taken from DIGITAL TRADITION.

JUST PLAIN OLD FOLKS
(Kevin Becker (C) 1985)

CHO: We ain't city, we ain't pretty
Bothered nor provoked
We're all for one and we sing for fun
We're just plain old folks

1. And we'll set for hours telling stories
That only a fool would believe
How we'll travel 'round the world
From a town we'll never leave
And how some day we'll all be rich
When progress steals our farms
Whenever wealthy people frown
Just say you meant no harm

2. Grab the banjo, get the guitar
Have a good old time
Hold the hand of the lady or man
Who makes you feel so fine
And sing a song of long ago
Or make one up brand new
Join the chorus, SINGOUT! loud
Express your point of view

3. Night is fading, morning's breaking
Our songs and stories told
Sleepy hours few and chores to do
As the new day now unfolds
But I'm sure glad we spent this time
To laugh and sing our songs
So next time bring that mandolin
And join our sing-along

Sorry, this isn't the one I'm looking for (actually, it's my wife who is
looking for it); but it looks like it could possibly be a modern
"re-write" in a happier mode than the original. The song I'm looking
for goes back _at least_ to the 1930s. Will see if she can "fit" these
lyrics to the melody & meter of the original. Thanks much for your
interest & response, anyway.

Cheers! Keep Pickin'

Yep!! That's the song!

My wife is actually the one who is looking for the lyrics, and
unfortunately, the fragment you sent is almost exactly the small bit that
she remembers. <g; rueful type> Her Mom used to sing it to her.

I used to hear Bradley Kincaid on the old National Barn Dance from WLS in
Chicago. I didn't know that he did a stint on the opry, too.

Many thanks for your efforts & response, anyway.

1. To a mansion in the city came a couple old and gray
To meet their son who left them long ago.
He had prospered and grown wealthy since in youth he ran away,
And now his life was one of pomp and show;
But coldly did he greet them, for rich friends were by his side
Who'd often heard him boast of home so grand;
But the old man sadly looked at him and said in modest pride,
As he gently took his dear wife by the hand:

CHORUS: "We are just plain folks, your mother and me,
Just plain folks, like our own folks used to be.
As our presence seems to grieve you,
We'll go away and leave you,
For we're sadly out of place here 'cause we're just plain folks."

[YODEL]

2. " 'Tain't so long ago since you were just a simple country lad,
And did the work that country lads should do.
In those days you never looked with shame on mother and old dad.
In fact, my boy, we both were proud of you.
But something must have changed you, for your wealth has brought vain pride.
Still riches sometimes take swift wings, they say.
But you'll always find a hearty welcome at your parents' side.
They'll greet you in the same old loving way."

CHORUS
