I have been given the challenge to locate what would commonly be termed
"trucker music." I am looking for specific song titles or specific artists
to look for.

Currently the only one I can think of is Red Sovine. What others can you
think of??

Thanks in advance,

Boxcar Willie did some . . . put out at least one cd of trucker music.
If you go to some truckstops you can find independantly produced tapes of
decidedly trucker tunes, usually mixed with off-color comedy. I've got a
few of 'em around somewhere . . .

Dave Dudley had some great songs on the subject.
I was once in a band that did nothing but trucking songs.
We ended the night (and our careers) with a version of "Convoy"which built to a
climactic ending blending parts of the Doors' "Break on Through", "The End" and
"LA Woman".

Merle Haggard's "White Line Fever" is a classic. He also did a theme song for
a TV series about truck drivers, but I can't remember the name of it. "Truck
Drivin' Man" is another classic, somewhat in the Sovine-Dave Dudley style. In
the 70s, the old Commander Cody Band did a truck driving album called "Hot
Licks, Cold Steel." That was more cosmic cowboy music, but it was great
stuff. I think the oldest truck driver song I can recall was "Truck Drivin'
Blues" by Cliff Bruner and the Texas Wanderers, back in the late 30s. This
was a pretty serious stuff, as compared to some of the contemporary bubble gum
country songs like "I love my truck" (Glen Campbell) or "Eighteen Wheeler"
(Alabama) or "Wolf Creek Pass" (CW McCall). Then there's the Grateful Dead's
"Truckin," but that's a whole 'nother category. Who was it that did "Eighteen
Wheels and a Dozen Roses?" That's a great song. The tradition continues.

That was the incomparable Kathy Mattea of her album "Untasted Honey".

HIGHWAY 52, by Little "Doc" Raymond & The Coleman Pardners. On the LP
"Virginia Traditions: Native Virginia Ballads," Blue Ridge Institute
BRI 004. I think it might have been reissued as a CD by Global
Village. Sample verse:

Now truckers take this warning,
If you go through Fancy Gap
And you don't slow that big rig down,
The Devil's on your lap,
The Devil's on your lap.

Is that truckery enough?

"Roll On, Big Mama" by Joe Stampley should be added to the list. My
favorite rendition of "Truck Drivin' Man" is by Red Steagall, because it
features Johnny Gimble on fiddle and Sonny Garish (long with Hank Thompson)
on steel. The intro has Gimble doing a vamp while Sonny makes the steel
sound like a truck engine going through all the gears. Solos are really
good, too. Great stuff.

Slim Dusty also did/does a number of "truckie" songs. And Little Feat (not
perzackly country) did _WILLIN'_ & _TRUCK STOP GIRL_.

And then there's my buddy, Bill Kirchen & Too Much Fun, who champions a
genre known as "dieselbilly". Good stuff. He used to play with Commander

RE: Trucking songs...
The major artist in this area is Bill Kirchen, formerly of Commander Cody
and the Lost Planet Airmen, who had the hit "Hot Rod Lincoln" around 1972.
Bill has a genre known as "Dieselbilly" music. TONS of truck songs, and an
incredible guitar player. See him live in the Maryland area mostly.
Try Asleep at the Wheel too, from Austin texas.

Also, Junior Brown is a good current artist for trucking songs.

All above are great live.
If you are anywhere near Ann Arbor, listen to WSDS AM 1480 for great classic
country nearly 24hrs/day.

Another great truck driving song is Willin' , originally recorded by
Little Feat and recently covered by Steve Earle and Jon Randall
(Stewart), among others

IMIO, no one will ever top Linda Ronstadt's cover.

Maybe I should ask Radio Shack. They claim they've got answers;
but frankly, if Radio Shack were our provider, we'd _really_ be in
trouble now, wouldn't we?

... Then you haven't listened to Little Feat's live version on
'Waiting For Columbus', IMHO!

Their live version was pretty nice on Rockline lastnight. But I'll always
prefer Linda's version.

I'll also always like Santana's big cover of the Fleetwood Mac original (of
'Black Magic Woman') as well. Oh well. I'm certain that Little Feat and
FlEETwood Mac aren't crying about it, and are happy with 1) that the songs
got out to a wider audience, and 2) the royalties.
