As per my prior exclamations regarding the music I heard at Mt Airy; I've
loaded 16 cuts of Kyle playing the fiddle, backed up by Bobby Patterson
(and Dave Freeman! on mandolin). No editting has been done and a few have
some leadin/out space. As far as I know, this stuff is completely out of
print, and hopefully uncopywrited (it'll stay online until I hear
otehrwise).

And for those who like their music somewhat more sugary, check out "der
Binger's" wonderful version of Camptown Races.

Enjoy,

Paul

Hi Maxine,
Blue Ridge Mountain Square Dance Time was recorded by Bobby Patterson in
1972. The full cast, in addition to Bobby and Kyle, are Pete Lissman and
Roy Russell on guitars, Dave freeman on mandolin and Katie Golding on
bass.

I beleieve Bobb posted that Virginia Reel was recorded in 1973. (All I
have is a tape of some of the cuts on this LP, but I bet it was a similar
configuration).

As I think you got, the joke was... CMT identified "Foggy Mountain
Breakdown" as one of the very greatest "songs" ever, and it ain't even
a &*$%in' "song," so I reckon I'll think of CMT next time I'm doing
something that could hardly be done at all, which _is_ about as often
as I plan to think of CMT.

I like "Boot Scootin' Boogie." But then I like "Pistol Packin' Mama";
it ain't Land Norris but it's a good time. (But then what was Norris,
really, but another good time? Norris:Acuff::Ory:Ellington.)

A friend of mine borrowed my Camp Creek Boys records a year or so ago. He
was in touch with Creed's family and apparently the original tapes were lost
(at that time, at least). I haven't given this any thought since, but I
suppose I ought to get in touch with my friend and find out what's
happening. The plan was, to find several copies of each tune and then
digitally clean up the better ones for a CD on the Mountain label. I've
heard nothing since.

You guys are reminding me of an IQ test I took back in high school,
except that in that case, one of the terms in the ratio was a question
mark, and you had to supply the answer.

So here's one:

OTM:CMT::Uncle Dave Macon:?

And when you answer the question, you'll know why the whole thread is
inappropriate for this newsgroup, or for any newsgroup on this planet.
But then again, I've always been on the side of inappropriateness.

To answer Library Guy's question, I live on a planet where people are
interested in Land Norris (33 years older than Roscoe Holcomb), Kid
Ory (25 years older than RH), Duke Ellington (12 years older than RH),
and Roy Acuff (8 years older than RH).

Through the kindness of Todd Denton, I've just loaded the first set which
Kyle and Fred played at the Brandywine Mountain Music Convention, July
7th, 1974 at:

http://www.unc.edu/~pmitchel

These mostly feature Fred on fiddle (gee, too bad:^! I love Freds' version
of Arkansas Traveler).

Coming later will be another set, and some selections from the Banjo
Workshop which also occurred that weekend.

Thanks Paul, these are lovely - it's great to hear their speaking voices as
well as the superb tunes.
Cheers
Ray

Dave, you're right.
Where's Jimmy Rodgers and many other country music pioneers.
If you'll notice about 50% of these so called "Greatest Songs," are
performed by modern day artist who have not proven theirselves over time.
The whole thing reeks of marketing. Something to fill a time slot and sell
the music of today's artists.
By the way, who in the hell are the people who make up these outragous
lists.
