I wonder if anyone can help me with this... I'm looking for a big anthology
or collection of American folk and traditional songs (I'm in the UK but
these days it's not a big deal with the net etc). Just words, melody and
chords would be fine. Would anyone know of one or something similar they'd
recommend?

Alan Lomax's 1960 Folk Songs of North America.
(Reprinted in full-size trade paperback around 1970.)
Sections are devoted to the northeast, the southeast,
the west, and to black music. A few full scale piano
arrangements are included, plus a section (pioneer in
its day) on guitar and banjo accompaniment styles. As
usual with Lomax, texts are often compilations. It's
as good an overview as I know of.

Neglected to mention that, along with a few piano
scores, each song has melody line with chords and even
a "suggested strum" keyed to the appendix on gtr/bjo
styles, provided by Peggy Seeger.

In addition to the recommendations you've already received, there's the
"Old Time String Band Songbook," by John Cohen, Mike Seeger, and Hally
Wood, which is mostly material from the New Lost City Rambler's early
repertoire, which in turn is a pretty good rendition of the real thing.
It's published by Oak. Google it and you'll find lots of sources for
it.

Also check out the bibliography to the Ballad Index
(www.csufresno.edu/folklore/BalladIndexBib.html). I doubt you'll find
any one book that will cover everything you'll want to learn.
