A PICTURE FROM LIFE'S OTHER SIDE
(Charles E. Baer?)
In the world's mighty gall'ry of pictures
Hang scenes that are painted from life,
There's pictures of joy and of sorrow,
There's pictures of peace and of strife,
There's pictures of youth and of beauty'
Old age and the blushing young bride.
All hang on the wall, but the saddest of all,
Is a picture from life's other side.
cho: it's a picture from life's other side,
Someone who fell by the way;
A life has gone out with the tide
That may have been happy one day;
Some poor old mother at home
Is watching and waiting alone,
Just longing to hear from her loved ones so dear,
It's a picture from life's other side.
The next scene is that of a gambler
Who lost all his money at play,
Draws his dead mother's ring from his finger
That she wore on her glad wedding day.
His last earthly treasure, he stakes it
Bows his head that his shame he might hide,
When they lifted his head, they found he was dead,
It's a picture from life's other side.
The next scene is that of two brothers
Whose paths in life different ways led,
The one was a-living' in luxury
While t'other one begged for his bread;
One dark night they met on a highway,
"Your money or life" the thief cried;
Then he took with his knife, his dear brother's life,
It's a picture from life's other side.
The next scene is down by the river,
A heart-broken mother and child,
The old harbor lights stand and shiver,
On an outcast that no one will save;
Perhaps she was once a good woman.
Somebody's darlin' and pride,
God help her, she leaps, there is no one to weep,
It's a picture from life's other side.

As others have posited elsewhere, it is most likely "A Picture From
Life's Other Side" that you seek. However, here are a set of lyrics
from the Georgia Yellow Hammers' rendition of "Picture on the Wall"
(when do you suppose they will have Document CDs?).
There's an old and faded picture on the wall
That has been hanging there for many years
'Tis a picture of my Mother; and I know there is no other
That can take the place of Mother on the wall.
On the wall (on the wall), on the wall (on the wall)
How I love that dear old picture on the wall
Time is swiftly passing by and I bow myhead and cry
But I know I'll meet my Mother after all
Now the children all have scattered, off and gone
And I have a little family of my own
And I know I love them well; more than any tongue can tell
But I hold that dear old picture on the wall
Chorus
Since I lost that dear old Mother years ago
There is none to which with troubles I can go
As my banjo makes a chord I am praying to the Lord
Let me hold that dear old picture on the wall
Chorus
Chorus (quietly)

Which leads us to the question as to who selected the set on the
out-of-print Rounder LP? How could they have left off:
Mary Don't You Weep
All Old Bachelors Are Hard To Please
When The Birds Begin Their Singing In The Trees
Rip Van Winkle Blues
and the amazing Come Over And See Me Sometime
Boy what a band! Thinking of them, my eyes do grow dimmer all the time.

If you are in the market for a great recording of that tune, obtain the
Seldom Scene's -"New Seldom Scene" album. Their rendition will make the hair
on your neck stand at attention!
More than likely i'll get my "yairs" pinned back for alluding to a BG group
on this channel, but what the heck. I just... go for the "GUSTO"...

Heck, I'll commit a greater sin by pointing out that Hank Williams
recorded it...as a talkie, no less. I think he was being Luke the
Drifter that day.
But I'll redeem my oldtime self by recommending the best version:
Smith's Sacred Singers, 1920s, Columbia somewhere round 15090. Anyone
know if any of the SSS stuff has been reissued? If not, why not?!

We used to try practicing this one, but always broke up when we got to
the visually arresting line about Mother being hung on the wall.
Also, the chorus ends up stressing "wall" rather than "mother", which
makes it doubly funny to us. As a result, we don't try it any more.
