I have a great recording form the Arkansas Shieks, I think from 1978 or'
79. Has anyone heard of them since and, if so, are there any descendent
groups still around. Really good stuff.

Hi,

I have an Arkansas Sheiks album called "Whiskey Before Breakfast" on Bay
from 1975. It's great. At least three of the Sheiks are still making
music. Laurie Lewis has been going strong with Grant Street, Tom Rozum,
and others. Kate Brislin and Jody Stecher do achingly beautiful old timey
duets. Tony Marcus plays with a jazzy group called Cats n' Jammers. I'm
not sure about the other Sheiks.

All in all a great album and a great group that was a crucible for much
great music.

I agree with Richard. The "Whiskey" album was a great influence on me way
back when. I only have a pirated tape so I never knew who was in the
group...a surprise to see Laurie Lewis, Jody Stecher and Kate Breslin.

I've got a tape of Bay 204, which I'm told was recorded in
1975. It's just called the Arkansas Sheiks. In addition to
those named above, Barbara Mendelsohn still plays music in
the Bay Area. I've seen her a couple of times in a trio with
Kate Brislin and Piper Heisig called the Chanterelles. I've
also seen her play with the Hillbillies from Mars; her husband
Kevin Carr plays with that band. Holly Tannen writes the
song finder column for Sing Out! and tells me she's planning
to move closer to the Bay Area than Mendocino soon. I don't
know what the other four (the Draytons, Hoyle Osborne, and
Tom Marion) are doing.

Three of us started a group in around 1970 that later became the Arkansas
Shieks. There was Holly Tannan, Karana Hattersley, and yours truly, Wayne
Erbsen. We called ourselves "Col. Sanders & the Southern Friend Chicken.I
believe we took turns on who would be the Col. Honorary members also included
Tony Markus, and a fiddler named Art Linhdhom, correct me if I've got his name
wrong. We played the Freight, played on the street, and also played a festival
which went bust, owing everybody money. All I had to show for it was a shirt I
was wearing...Fond memories.

Seems I remember a country band in Berkeley about 1969 called "Col.
Sandoz and the Kentucky Fried Brains". I think they later played the
Freight under the new name "Blind Captain Chicken". Not the same
folks, if I recall. Hazy memories of those days.........

Lots of "stuff to eat" references in band names back then. Holly and
I, along with Dave and Phyllis Ricker, played in a string band called
"The All Go Hungry Hash House". Sue Thompson subtitled us "a
Dignified String Band". I've certainly come a long way since then.

PS - I recall Reno & Sparks too, but could never tell which one was
which.

I saw the Arkansas Shieks as the warm-up act for Bill Monroe back in
'76(?) at San Jose State and they were fine! My question is, who was that
large bearded guy playing that fine clawhammer banjo with them? Anybody
remember him?

The bearded guy playing banjo with the Arkansas Shieks in '76 may have
been Jon Pedersen. Or possibly Tony Marcus. Any other guesses?? Suzy
