You'll see a variety of old-time stuff including banjo at the Chester
County Old Fiddlers Picnic in Hibernia Park near Coatesville PA. It's on
August 12, with lots of camping and jamming over the weekend. Plenty of
time to write for info to: Chester County Parks & Recreation Dept., 601
Westtown Rd., West Chester PA 19382.

This year will be my first time at the Philadelphia Folk Festival. I'm
not sure how much banjo there will be, but it's certainly an alternative
to bluegrass. Camping, concerts, workshops, etc. Write Phila. Folksong
Society, 7113 Emlen St, Phila PA 19119 or call 1-800-556-FOLK or
1-215-247-1300.

In the meantime, here's some info on New England concert events that
might be of interest:

From: wa...@theory.lcs.mit.edu (David Wald)
Newsgroups: rec.music.celtic,rec.music.folk
Subject: On-line calendar of New England folk concerts
Date: 06 May 1995 16:16:28 GMT

THE REMINDER: For a while now I've been maintaining an on-line
calendar of folk concerts in New England. The calendar consists of
(most) listings that come my way in electronic form, together with
anything else I come across that's of personal interest to me. The
World-Wide Web version also includes links to additional information
on artists and venues.

Given the haphazard style of information gathering, I make no claims
as to completeness or accuracy, but the calendar is large enough and
frequently enough updated that I'm assuming that it's at least
occasionally correct and/or useful (if only on the same principle that
makes a stopped clock right twice a day).

THE REQUEST: As I said above, if I get a listing electronically, it'll
probably wind up in the calendar. Please send any corrections or
additions that seem appropriate to <wa...@theory.lcs.mit.edu>, and I
will do my best to keep the thing reasonably up to date.

How to get it:
on the World-Wide Web: http://theory.lcs.mit.edu/~wald/calendar.html
by ftp: the file is on theory.lcs.mit.edu as pub/wald/concert-calendar.
by email: send mail containing the line "send wald concert-calendar" to
archive...@theory.lcs.mit.edu. Note that capitalization
(or rather, the lack of it) and spelling are important, and
your message should contain no extraneous text.

For the impatient, I've attached the next week's worth of plaintext
listings (abbreviations are explained after the listings).

Enjoy.

-David

Does anyone know of any old time music festivals located within a days
drive of Central Massachusetts. I know of plenty of bluegrass festivals,
but can't seem to find anyplace where clawhammer banjo players and such
congregate for a festival. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Respond here or e-mail to Spec...@aol.com.

depends on how long a day is for you. In 16 hrs you can be down
south-this is not quite a day's drive. Closer to home is Old Songs in
Albany which is a folk fest but many oldtimey types do go and camp in the
campground and play. There is Lake Champlain festival in Burlington
VT-1st week in Aug...some old time but most of the oldtimeys are in
Clifftop WV that week...good luck

Be careful with this one. It is extremely expensive and VERY LARGE.
You will have to search hard to find a good oldtime jam which is
accessible to people they don't know....

Old Songs is *not* an old-time-music fest (despite the name) but does tend to
be far more of a folk fest than a singer-songwriter fest. They will have a few
acts each year which can legitimately be called "old-time" by the criteria
of this group; this year they have Ginny Hawker & Kay Justice, & Leroy Troy.
And they have a hugely attended Sacred Harp sing both days as a yearly
institution. Only an hour long each day though. Just as well from my
currently ailing point-of-view.

One you might still be able to get into is Southern Week at Ashokan
(Eastern Catskills), NY, sometime in August. Run by Jay Ungar and Molly
Mason. Those are all the details I have at the moment, but someone here
must be able to provide more.

Old Songs Festival is said to be a festival of traditional music and
dance. Lately, it is taking on the character of an international music
festival. There are always lots of superb performers, a couple of which
are old-time. This year will have Bob Carlin and Joe Thompson, along with
Tracy Schwarz, Ginny Hawker, and Kay Justice. The real fun of this
festival, however, is in the campground (in the "old time ghetto"), where
some of the finest music to be heard anywhere happens.

Greetings from the Old-Time Herald. Each year in the Feb.-Apr. issue we
publish a festival listing by state. We are a quarterly magazine dedicated
to old-time music. For information write PO Box 51812, Durham NC 27717;
call 919-416-9433, or email ager...@nando.net.

1) There is indeed some good oldtime music to be found at the Old Songs
festival.
2) Some good jamming was going on at the Dance Flurry this year, and
next year it should get even better.
3) Southern Week at Ashokan (Fiddle and Dance, West Hurley, NY) would
probably have space for men.
4) Falcon Ridge is a new festival with a terrific dance floor and good
energy. We will be working to bring a representation of old time into it
as time passes...I'm bringing my fiddle.
5) Grassroots is another good festival, (Ithaca, NY), but I'm told that
it is somewhat uncomfortable and loud. There was jamming happening there
last year though.
6) Clearwater Revival had a nice session last year.
7) None of the above mentioned events, with the exception of Southern
Week, are strictly old time events.
