The University of Chicago Folklore Society announces its 37th
Annual University of Chicago Folk Festival of Traditional Music
to be held February 7-9. Groups at this year's Festival will include:
The James King Band (Virginia bluegrass)
John Jackson (acoustic Piedmont blues)
Robert Jardell and Pure Cajun (Louisiana Cajun)
The New Ballard's Branch Bogtrotters (old-time stringband)
Voices of Evening Star (Chicago gospel choir)
Los Traficantes del Norte (Tex-Mex conjunto)
John Williams, Liz Carroll, Pat Broaders (traditional Irish)
J. P. Fraley (old-time fiddle)
Golden "Big" Wheeler (Chicago blues)
Grupo de Arpa Alegria de Michoacan (Mexican harp band)
George Hillocks (highlands bagpipe)
Tickets are on sale at the Reynolds Club box office at 57th and
University Ave.; for phone orders with a credit card, call (773)
702-7300. Student tickets are just $7 for each evening concert
and non-student tickets are $14. The Friday concert (Feb. 7)
starts at 8 pm, the Saturday concert (Feb. 8) starts at 7:30 pm,
and the Sunday concert (Feb. 9) starts at 6:15 pm. All evening
concerts are held in Mandel Hall in the Reynolds Club (57th
and University).
The evening concerts, which will all begin with George Hillocks on
bagpipes, feature (not necessarily in this order):
Friday: James King Band; John Jackson; Robert Jardell and Pure Cajun;
The New Ballard's Branch Bogtrotters; Voices of Evening Star;
Los Traficantes del Norte
Saturday: John Williams, Liz Carroll, and Pat Broaders; John Jackson;
Robert Jardell and Pure Cajun; The New Ballard's Branch
Bogtrotters; J.P. Fraley; Grupo de Arpa Alegria de Michoacan
Sunday: James King Band; J.P. Fraley; John Williams, Liz Carroll,
and Pat Broaders; Voices of Evening Star; Big Wheeler
Free workshops are held from 10 am to 5 pm on Saturday and Sunday in
Ida Noyes Hall, 1212 E. 59th St. (corner of 59th and Woodlawn). The
workshops are generally small settings where performers can discuss
and play their music and audience members can ask questions.
Some workshops, especially the four dances, are participatory; dance
instruction is provided either before dances or during them.

Saturday
10-11 am Bluegrass with the James King Band
11 am-12 pm Korean Drums with the University of Chicago
Loose Roots group
12-1 pm Guitars with Jebb Hubal (Pure Cajun) and John Jackson
(blues)
12-1 pm Sarsaparilla childrens workshop with Skip and Fran Landt
1-2 pm Fiddle with Liz Carroll (Irish), J. P. Fraley (Kentucky old-
time), and Milton Joseph Melancon (Pure Cajun)
2-3 pm Through the Folklore Revival with Pun and Stamina -
a lecture by Joe Hickerson (Smithsonian Institute)
2:30-3:30 pm Songs of the Great Lakes with Susan Brown
2:30-3 pm Appalachian dance instruction (for the 3 pm dance)
3-5 pm A dance with the New Ballard's Branch Bogtrotters
stringband (half clogging and half Appalachian squares)
Sunday
10:30-11:30 Childrens workshop with the Benkerts
11 am-12 pm Blues with John Jackson
11:30am-1pm Cajun dance instruction (beginning instruction from
11:30-12:15, and intermediate from 12:15 to 1)
12-4 pm Shape note sing
1-3 pm Cajun dance with Robert Jardell and Pure Cajun
1:30-3 pm Irish ceili dance with Liz Carroll, John Williams, and
Pat Broaders
3-5 pm Barn Dance with the Chicago Barn Dance Company
