Do you mean "They Cut Down The Old Pine Tree"? All I remember is the
chorus:

They cut down the old pine tree,
And hauled it away to the mill,
To make a coffin of pine,
For that sweetheart of mine.
They cut down the old pine tree.

If this is the right song, the words below are from the Digital Tradition.
THEY CUT DOWN THE OLD PINE TREE
(Willie Raskin, George Brown, Edward Eliscu)

They cut down the old pine tree

And they hauled it away to the mill

To make a coffin of pine

For that sweetheart of mine

They cut down the old pine tree

But she's not alone in her grave tonight,
For it's there my heart will al-ways be;
Though we'd drifted a-part,
Still they cut down my heart,
When they cut down the old pine tree.

They cut down the old pine tree

And they hauled it away to the mill
There'll be no coffin of pine
For that sweetheart of mine

They cut down the old pine tree

But she's not alone in her grave tonight,
For it's there my heart will always be;
Now I always will roam,
For they cut down my home,
When they cut down the old pine tree.

They cut down the old pine tree

And they hauled it away to the mill
There'll be no cradle of pine
For that sweetheart of mine

They cut down the old pine tree

But she's not alone in her grave tonight,
For it's there my heart will always be;
Now I'm lost and forlorn,
Wish I'd never been born,
Since they cut down the old pine tree.

Isn't it on one of the Martin, Bogan & Armstrong
LPs?

I remember it (but never saw it written) as:

Oh they cut down the old pine tree

And hauled it away to the mill,

To make a coffin of pine for that sweetheart of mine
When they cut down the old pine tree.

She's not alone in her grave tonight
For its there my heart will always be;
Oh we drifted apart and they cut down my heart
When they cut down the old pine tree.

I have no idea of its age or origins. I remember it from sixty odd years ago,
from the radio (?), music and all. The lyrics would suggest possibly mountain
origin,
perhaps sung by the Carters or some similar group.

Don't know. Years ago I had a 78 of it by The Rice Brothers Gang. Very
swing-ish string band in the Hoosier Hotshots vein with, as I recall, a
clarinet taking a lead.

That would have been Hoke Rice and his brothers. Hoke also,
along with his swingier and novelty stuff, did time on guitar with
the Skillet Licker crowd. I wonder if that was Kaspar D.
"Stranger" Malone on that clarinet?

It's hardly old. Vincent Youmans is best known for "Tea for Two."

The Digital Tradition evidently didn't know all the words. What's
shown is preceded by a verse:

Stop a while and listen to my story,
I just came down from the hills,
I went there to see my childhood sweetheart,
Midst the roses and the whipporwills.

I went back to look for the old pine tree,
That haunted my memories so.
It was there she said she'd be waiting for me,
When we carved our hearts long ago.

But the old pine tree was gone,
Still my love for her lingers on.

Oh they cut down <etc.>

The above is from memory, based on the Red Foley recording, available
on a CD from Bronco Busters (Dagmar Binge).

Which brings to mind an old story from a different tradition. Stravinsky
and someone else are walking down the street when they hear Tea For Two on
a radio somewhere. It was the Rocky Top of its day, it seems, and was to
be heard hundreds of times each day. Someone else says to Stravinsky "What
awful caterwauling!" Stravinsky says "No way! That could be pretty good
if...." Stravinsky published an arrangement of TFT in Stravinsky style. I
heard it at the same time as I heard the story. The piece was pretty wild.

Stay tuned for the story about Stravinsky and George Gershwin.

Best wishes,

Joel Shimberg

Dee Ray White used to do this ditty (or something close--I haven't heard it in
some time) while performing a dance that sounded just like a woodpecker (I
think he called his dance the "shotgun blast"). Not sure it's what you're
looking for, but it's definitely original old time country folk music...

Woodpecker peckin' on the old yellow pine,
I see the woodpecker but you don't see mine.

I bet thye mean Red Sovine's "Old Pine Tree," a recitation about a tree that
keeps calling to a guy. He ends up dying (It IS a red sovine song after all)
and gets buried in the "Old Pine Tree..You Belong to Me"

I can remember some of the words, but am unable to find the complete
lyrics anywhere on the web. Am sure they are there, just not where I
have looked. Anyway here's what I can give you from memory:
Stop awhile and listen to my story
I've just come down from the hills
I went there to find my childhood sweetheart
Midst the roses and the dafodils

It was there she said she'd be waiting for me

When we carved our hearts long ago

But the old pine tree was gone

Still my love for her lingers on

Chorus:
Oh, they cut down the old pine tree

And they hauled it away to the mill

To build a coffin of pine for that old sweetheart of mine
Oh, they cut down the old pine tree.

Hope this is of some help.

If I find anything more definitive, I will get back to you

Spoke with my son and he went back 25 years to find an additional verse
besides the one I already sent to you. Here goes:

But she's not alone in her grave tonight
For its there my heart will always be
Though I'm lost and forelorn
Wish'ed I never been born
Since they cut down the old pine tree.

This is a great beginning to finding the complete words to a song I've
loved ever since I heard Curly Ray Cline sing a short part of it. But
these words don't quite fit the tune. For instance, I would imagine
that the third line (below) would have to be something like "I went
there to find that old sweetheart of mine." Does anyone have any
further recollections?

The intro. verse has a completely different melody and changes from
the rest of the song.

There was a song sung by Johnny Horton about an old pine tree that watched over him where his mother died giving birth to him and growing up he climbed it high with no fear. I then as an adult finds out he's dying of cancer. Goes back to buy the tree to find out it's cut down. Saddened he goes to funeral home and while checking caskets hears a whisper saying you belong to me. Turns out the casket was made from the tree. called old pine tree. Only found it on a hits album one time it was white had abt 25 or so hits at a truck stop but didn't have money to buy it.

Stumpy, I have Johnny Horton's complete works, and he *never* recorded that song. However, Red Sovine did.
