How many of Bob Wills'Texas Playboys- the ones who played on
the last session (December 1973) and toured in the years
afterwards- have died to date? I know the Playboys disanded after
Alton Strickland's death. After that, I heard that Leon McAuliff
died. Who's left?
Favorite Wills music:
Faded Love
La Golandrina
Maiden's Prayer
Summit Ridge Drive
Big Balls in Cowtown
Where Do We Go From Here?
Born to Love You.

There are only three of the "original" Texas Playboys left (Well,
actually, nobody that played with the original band that Bob formed
in Waco in 1934 is still alive, but that's another story) Smokey Dacus
Bob's first drummer is still alive; Joe Ferguson, who joined in 1936
and played Bass, sax, and also sang is still living in Ft. Worth. I
had the pleasure of meeting him at a recent Western Swing Festival.
Eldon Shamblin, one of the pioneers of the electric guitar, lives in
Tulsa, and he recently released a new album! Eldon and Joe are both 80,
I think Smokey is close to 85. There were many other western swing
bands here in Texas in the 30's and 40's and some are still performing:
Adolph Hofner, The Light Crust Doughboys, THe Texas Tophands. If you
want to dig these look for an album/ Cd set called Okeh Western Swing
put out by Columbia.
