I am a cataloger attempting to identify George Segal, who played banjo
on a ragtime disc called "A touch of ragtime" a few years ago. He also
played with the Canadian Brass on a disc called "Basin Street." Does
anyone know anything about him? A birthdate would be especially
helpful. I am trying to distinguish him from the actor George Segal (b.
1934) who co-starred in "Where's Poppa" (1970), among other films. They
aren't the same person, are they?

Please email me. Thanks very much for any and all info.

Yes, Geoffrey - George Segal the banjoist is one and the same as George
Segal the actor. In addition to the recordings above, he also plays
regularly (from what I understand) with the Beverly Hills Unlisted Jazz
Band under director Conrad Janis, son of Harriet Janis, one of the
co-authors of the ragtime "bible," They All Played Ragtime." Segal makes
frequent appearences around L.A. - I saw him in '96 at the L.A. Classic
Jazz Festival.

If memory serves, Conrad Janis is also an actor. I *think* it was he who
played Mindy's father in "Mork and Mindy" almost 20 years ago, someone correct
me if I'm wrong.

Unless, of course, this is a completely different Conrad Janis...<g>

Yep, they are the same person! Segal frequently appeared on the Johnny
Carson show to play banjo, and is very good at it!

From his brief bio on the Internet Movie Database,
13 February 1934, Great Neck, New York, USA. was his birthdate and
location of birth. Fine actor!

Hi guys.
Yes, I have the recording (vinyl) of George Segal and Theresa Brewer on
"A Touch of Ragtime". with the Imperial Jazz Band. And,yes. the actor and
the banjoist are one in the same. Segal appeared several times on the Johnny
Carson Show playing his banjo.. Segal also wrote a cute little piece for the
recording called "Bennie Badoo". The recording was on Signature Records
bsli-0654 ( a subsidiary of RCA). Jim

It is indeed the same Conrad Janis.

George Segal is on a current sitcom. He plays the editor of a magazine
and on the first few shows he played his banjo. The name of the show
escapes me right now.(I probably would have remembered the name if he
played on every show).

Many actors and actresses are far more multi-talented than we think.
If you are an entertainer it can only multiply your chances at jobs
if you dance, sing, act, tell jokes, juggle, etc.

They are indeed the same person. George went through a couple of years
of playing many TV gigs with a "celebrity ragtime band" which was named
something like that, but I can't remember the exact words. I think
this would have been during the last years of Johnny Carson / Tonight
Show, because that rings a bell for where they often appeared.
