DEEP ELM BLUES
When you go down in Deep Elm just to have a little fun
Better have fifteen dollars when that policeman runs;
cho: Oh sweet mama, daddy's got them Deep Elm blues
Oh sweet mama, daddy's got them Deep Elm blues.
When you go down in Deep Elm put your money in your pants;
Them blood suckin' women won't give a man a chance; (Refrain)
I used to know a preacher, read the bible thru and thru
He come down in Deep Elm, got them Deep Elm blues; (Refrain)

BROWN'S FERRY BLUES
H@rd luck poppa, a-countin' his toes,
You can smell his feet wherever he goes,
Lord, Lord, and he's got those Brown's Ferry Blues.
Hard luck poppa done lost his stuff
The trouble with him he's played too rough.
Lord, Lord, and he's got those Brown's Ferry Blues.
Two old maids a-sitting in the sand,
Each one wishing that the other was a man,
Lord, Lord, got those Brown's Ferry Blues
Two old maids done lost their style,
If you want to be lucky you got to smile.
Lord, Lord, got those Brown's Ferry Blues
Early to bed and early, to rise,
And your girl goes out with other guys.
Lord, Lord, got those Brown's Ferry BIues
If you don't believe me try it yourself,
Well I tried it and I got left.
Lord, Lord, got those Brown's Ferry Blues
Hardluck poppa standing in the rain,
If the world was corn he couldn't buy grain.
Lord, Lord, got those Brown's Ferry Blues
Hardluck poppa standing in the snow,
His knees knock together but he's raring to go.
Lord, Lord, got those Brown's Ferry Blues.

Make up your own verses. Here are some old ones:
When you go down to Deep Ellum
Just to have a little fun
Better have your fifteen dollars,
When that policeman comes,
Once I had a sweetheart,
She meant the world to me,
She went down to Deep Ellum,
Now she ain't what she used to be,
When you go down to Deep Ellum,
Keep you money in your pants,
Cause the redheads in Deep Ellum,
Never give a man a chance,
When you go down to Deep Ellum,
Keep your money in your socks,
Cause the women in Deep Ellum,
Sure will put you on the rocks,
When you go down to Deep Ellum,
Keep your money in your shoes,
Cause the women in Deep Ellum,
Have those Deep Ellum blues,
Once I knew a preacher,
Preached the Bible through and through,
He went down to Deep Ellum,
Now his preachin' days are through,
When you go down to Deep Ellum,
Keep your carburetor clean,
Cause those women in Deep Ellum,
Sell you dirty gasoline,
Chorus:
Oh sweet Mama, Daddy's got those Deep Ellum Blues,
Oh sweet Mama, Daddy's got those Deep Ellum Blues.

The Cofer Brothers version, "The Georgia Black Bottom," OK 45111,
would have been recorded during the Golden Age, (the late 1920's), but
I don't know the exact date. Since Deep Ellum is a specific place,
like Fannin Street or Beale Street, the Cofer version probably did not
influence the Shelton version. "Brown's Ferry Blues," by the Delmore
Brothers, BB B5403, is a different tune, more bluesy, takes place in
a completely different state (Alabama), and describes a locale that
now features a bunch of nuclear power plants, some of which are
marginally operational and should be good material for extra verses.
For example, one of the world's first serious nuclear power plant
accidents (long before Three Mile Island) took place at Brown's Ferry,
when a licensed operator was looking for a leak in a control cable
bundle with a candle. The idea was that, since the other side was
pressurized, the leaking air should divert the candle flame.
Unfortunately, he set fire to the cable instead, and so the operators
lost the ability to shut down the plant. Except for a few lucky
breaks, Brown's Ferry would have taken the place of Chernobyl as
shorthand for what happens when technology and stupidity are
indiscriminately mixed.
Following is the New Lost City Rambler's version (whose words are
handier), which is pretty close to the Delmore's (from FA 2396, the
first 12" NLCR LP album, 1958).
Hardluck poppa counting his toes,
You can smell his feet wherever he goes;
Lord, Lord, got those Brown's Ferry blues
Hardluck poppa can't do his stuff,
The trouble with him he's been too rough;
Lord, Lord, got those Brown's Ferry blues.
Two old maids a-sitting in the sand,
Each one a-wishing that the other was a man;
Lord, Lord, etc.
Two old maids done lost their style,
If you want to be lucky you got to smile;
Lord etc.
Early to bed and early to rise,
And your girl goes out with other guys;
Lord etc.
If you don't believe me try it yourself,
Well I tried it and I got left;
Lord etc.
Hardluck poppa standing in the rain,
If the world was corn he couldn't buy grain;
Lord etc.
Hardluck poppa standing in the snow,
His knees knock together but he's raring to go;
Lord etc.
