My understanding is that this is a discography. Though
there is discographical information in Country Music
Sources, it comes in a different format. I guess I'll
let you know when I see it. Or, since Tony sometimes
posts here, maybe he'll explain the difference in the
two books.
Steve
Steve is correct: CMR is a discography on the same principle as
'Blues & Gospel Records 1890-1943', the various jazz
discographies, etc., i.e. arranged alphabetically by artist then
chronologically within each artist-entry. It thus offers the
opportunity to inspect a given artist's entire known work (issued
and unissued), with personnel/instrumentation data, recording
locations and dates, issues (in all territories) and a good deal
of subsidiary information. M-S-M is not, of course, arranged in
that way, but besides that, I believe I am right in saying that my
book includes a considerable amount of information not to be found
in that work - as well as such extras as histories of the relevant
record companies and their dealings with the music documented in
the book.
That said, I regret to pass on to members of the group the news,
which I've just received from OUP, that finished copies of the
book will not be available until late September (i.e. about a
month later than I'd previously been told), so the 9/10
publication date that is currently being cited is, once again,
incorrect. I have no idea why there will be this further delay.

Tony, thanks for that clarification! I see what you mean, and I didn't
until this post of yours. Clearly a book worth having.

With all that pent-up demand, the book should be on the best-seller
list the first week on the market. As to the second week, well ...

It almost sounds real this time. I'm hoping to be holding
the book in my hands in a month or so. (And as I told Tony,
I'll only believe it when I do. :( )
Steve
I have a MS copy of the thing in a 50 Lb cardboard box. It's
great, & I've always loved books BUT ... wouldn't this project
be better as a website? That is, think of the advantages of
being able to search the entire work via computer for titles,
musicians, recording dates, etc.
Finding things is one talent that computers have in spades, and
the combination of all this scholarship with a computerized
search engine would be fantastic.
As an example, I was one of the first to buy the Bear Family
Uncle Dave Macon boxed set. I love it: great songs, great
photos, excellent writing by Charles Wolf. Yet there is NO
INDEX, for God's sake! So, to find references to a particular
song, one has to read through the entire text, discography, etc.
What a royal pain....

I'm holding it in *my* hands right now (and typing this message at
the same time, a neat trick), so it really is real. OK, it's an
advance copy sent straight from the warehouse, and I gather it
won't be available for a couple of weeks or so, but you may be
assured that this is no chimera. If you'll allow me to say so, I
think it looks rather handsome. Thanks to you all for your
patience.
