I have just moved to Conroe Tx, just north of Houston, and am looking for
the old time and traditional music scene. I tried emailing the local contra
dance organization, but so far have not heard anything from them. I just
discovered this newsgroup, and am hoping you can help me.

My name is Bob Hensley, and I am a transplant from central North Carolina
(thru St Augustine FL). I play fiddle, banjo, guitar, mandolin, dulcimer,
and bass, and have played for many years with all types of musical groups. I
would be interested in finding out about local jams, bands needing
musicians, and any places that old time and other traditional players hang
out.

I am also a repairman of stringed instruments. I owned and operated my own
store in central NC for many years (The Pinedene Jazz Center), and also did
repair work for several high end stores in the St Augustine area before we
moved here. I have my shop set up and ready to go for anyone requiring
repairs.

Please help me find some players to hang out with.... I miss playing!

I wish I could help, but I can't.

Instead, I'll ask the question on everyone else's mind -- why on earth leave
God's country for the armpit of the US?

Good luck,

as i have discovered, the only unchanging thing in life is that everything
changes. I left God's country, as you call it, because after 20 years
looking at the same 4 walls everyday and a failed marriage, i was ready for
a change. so, i sold my store, packed my recording gear and repair tools,
and moved to St Augustine. I chose St Aug because there is a very cool music
scene there... i had been doing remote recordings with my studio down there
for several years before heading there for good. But in the course of that
period of time, i fell in love with a woman from Conroe. i convinced her to
move with me to Florida, and we lived there very happy for 4 years....then 4
hurricanes came thru in about 6 weeks, and i was informed that hurricanes
and ladies from Conroe do not mix! well, who can argue with that? it took us
2 years more to make it back, but we are back in the bosom of Texas, and
close again to her family and friends.

i have to say in defense of Texas (which doesn't even need my defense, but
here it is) that at least this area is much like the area i came from in
NC... pine trees, hilly country, temperatures and humidity much the same. i
will say that drivers in Texas scare the hell out of me, and i have driven
in quite a few major cities, and all over the " retired" parts of Florida! i
have been passed ON THE LEFT SIDE while sitting at red lights, almost run
off the road more times in the last few months than in most of the rest of
my life, and i fear for my teenage son who is learning to drive in this
madness. and the worst part is that it seems to be the norm, it isn't just
occasional!

the one hole in Texas for me so far is finding people to play with. i am
even working in a music store, but most of the players coming into the one i
work for are either school band or more pop oriented. so i am trying to
figure out how to find the folks who MUST be here somewhere....i have heard
of 1 local bluegrass jam (which only happens once a month), which work has
prevented me from attending so far, but otherwise, Texas is a black hole as
far as traditional music for me up to this point.

ah well... i am still playing, and this gives me time to perfect the kid's
show i have been working on. i have been doing instrument demos at festivals
on the east coast for kids days, and have decided maybe i can sell it here
in Texas. maybe someone on this group can also help me find lists of street
fairs and festivals that might use that type of act... i used to use the NC
State vacation guide to find them in NC... does Texas have such a thing?

ok, enough explanation. Texas is here, and so am i.... any players here with
us? :)

Bob

Hi, Bob--

I suggest that you seek out Marynell Young, who is extremely
well-informed about Texas OT musicians. Unfortunately, I'm at work
right now and don't have access to her email address, but if you'll
send me a note as a reminder (my memory'd going down the toilet these
days...), I'll be glad to shoot it your way. You can find me at
duckshoes[at]gmail[dot]com.
