I used to think selling my music would give me more time to write and
play, until I read an article in Songwriter's Musepaper by Harriet
Schock, who wrote "Ain't No Way to Treat a Lady" (Helen Reddy). She
said that after she started making money from her music, she found she
had even less time to write because she was always in recording
sessions, negotiating with publishers, arguing for royalties, etc.

A lot of her trouble was related to being on the road
and performing. If you are a writer, you better set some
time aside from road dates to write in a stress free atmos-
phere. Maybe Helen just let her agent burn her out with
too tough a schedule? If she had any sense, she would have
hired someone to take care of the business end. Maybe she
was too greedy and caused a lot of her own problems?
I DON'T want to be a touring musician, just write music
and let some other fool kill himself trying to grab the big
brass ring. I don't even want the general public to know who
I am but I would like to make a decent living having them
enjoy my music. Sitting on a bench in Valley Forge Park,
playing a guitar and having a few people stand around and
enjoy what they heard is good enough for my ego. Besides,
the style of music that I write and enjoy isn't likely to
make me a superstar and that is fine with me. When I in-
cluded being a "musician" in the original post, I meant a
musician that plays for the enjoyment of it and as a tool
in writing, _NOT_ a stressed out touring musician. This
is the reason a lot of great musicians prefer studio work.
I prefer writing and playing for my own enjoyment!
