In the March issue of "Choir and Organ," there is a small b&w picture
entitled "New Feature in Console Fittings," referring the reader to page 34.
There, one can read about the restored Hill organ at St Paul's at
Newcastle-under-Lyme. The instrument was rebuilt by George Sixsmith & Sons,
and what I found most unique was that when the Tibia Liquida is drawn, a
miniature cocktail cabinet is revealed above the stopknobs of the Pedal and
Swell divisions, 'complete with essentials.'
No wonder all the Anglican organists I know are always in such cheerful moods!
The Rieger at Ratzeburg Dom has a similar stop, called "Rauschwerk",
which when drawn opens a liquor drawer. It's a clever German pun:
"Rausch" can mean "sound", and thus "Rauschwerk" can be the name for a
regular organ stop. But it can also mean "intoxicated" (probably related
to the English "roaring drunk")!

lasting weeks, finally resulting in a threat against our lives if
we did not get the topic off the list. (we complied)
I see that the thread had once again darkened our doorways.....
Well just remember *I* did it first.
I recall about 50 divisions and a grand totall of several hundred ranks.
There was an ejector seat in the pulpit as well.
Not only did we have a hotbois ("hot boy") we had a cold one and a hot girlie.
Not only did we have a swell, we also had fantastic.
We even had gospel, revival, missionary (entire division en-chamade) & even
an evangelical division (installed in the tower, speaks to the outdoors)
Of course I just can't help but also add two of my favorite "Funny" Stops as

Actually, it was the early 1980s. I remember how sitting in the little
apartment I had in my U of O days I got a call from a total stranger (in
Texas?...) thanking me for my letter in The Diapason. I asked "what
letter?" ; he said "the one about stop nomenclature" and I said "YOU
MEAN THEY ACTUALLY PRINTED THAT THING?!" I had practically forgotten all
about it, and hadn't received that month's issue yet. The caller went on
to say how the Diapason could too often be so dry and dull and my humor
really helped to lighten things up. Very nice of him...
I remember how in the ensuing year or so other readers submitted humorous
spex of their own. I don't doubt that many thought they could improve on
mine, which is after all a bit blunt, even crass in approach. A friend
of mine had been working on his own funny stoplist for years, and its
ideas were far more clever:
RUGWERK
8' Throw
3" Shag
elsewhere:
8' Tibia
4' Fibula
2' Ulna
Etc... It also had a 32' Understatement, not to mention a Tuba Mirum.
But the point of my letter wasn't so much the funny stoplist as it was a
commentary on the state of the art of organ voicing. The stoplist was
actually largely patterned on a certain organ I had the misfortune of
playing in concert... and my stoplist was actually a fairly objective
attempt to describe its sounds in concise, accurate terms.
I remember seeing an organ in Berkeley in a church - a small early
Brombaugh I recall(?) that had a cigarflute. I recall the organ sat on
the floor to one side of the room. I saw it at the AGO 1984
convention during our day in Berekley when we got to walk around and see
organs - lovely day, nice weather etc. Perhaps it is in the convention
book which I have somewhere... The use of the name seemed a bit strange
for such a location.. was it a house organ originally.

Another Southern Pipe Organ Discovered
Amid preparations for this year's Convention, a recently-discovered
instrument has definitely been identified as a genuine Southern Pipe
Organ. The first such organ was described by William Repperger in THE
CYPHER (Newsletter of the Greater St. Louis Chapter) in 1978. Additional
research was contributed by Kristin Gronning, Culver Mowers, Christopher
Greenleaf, James McFarland, Randy McCarty and over a dozen other
scholars. Although it is difficult to determine the specification of a
disassembled instrument, the following is believed to be accurate:
Great
Antebellum Gamba 16
Magnolia Diapason 8
Tarabella 8
Flute Hominyque 8
Grits Flute 4 (ext)
Quint Julep 2 2/3
Rebel Yell 2

Booth Flute 2
Dred Scornott 1 3/5
Robert E. Larigot 1 1/3 (prepared for)
Flamingo 1
Cornponean 8
Sacred Harp 8
Southern Belles 21 notes
*The Schwarzwerk is a separate, but equal division, perhaps originally
installed as a Rhettpositif. Further research shows that it may have
consisted originally of a massive Race Mixture XXX, proving its relation
to the medieval Blackwerk.

Deep South 32
Plantation 16
Jemimaphone 8
Possumbass 16
Basscoon 8
Accessories
Creolescendo
Y'all (apparently a sforzando)
Hesh (apparently a general cancel)
Bourbon to Organist (apparently a fifth)
The organ is winded from a double-rise carpet bag, and was orignally
equipped with a Welty player mechanism; a cakewalk is provided for tuning
access. It is currently in storage at the Appomattox Clearing House,
awaiting reconstruction.

AGO Region I Convention, 1997
Eligibility: Open to all interested composers, without limitations as to
age, nationality, or experience.
Contest I: A free organ piece suitable for use in a worship service. The
full range of musical expression from quiet contemplation to exuberant joy
can be considered. Pieces for Contests I & II should not be longer than
approximately 4 minutes.
Contest II: An organ piece based on one of the following hymn tunes found
in recent denominational hymnals. Consideration of the character of the
tune and the sense of the text(s) associated with it is recommended.

LBW = Lutheran Book of Worship (1978) Yale = New Hymnal for Colleges and

Contest III: A new hymn based on one of the given texts (to follow in
subsequent announcements). Vocal range, sensitivity of music to text, and
singability by a congregation are important considerations. Harmonization
in parts would be appropriate, as would a straightforward organ
accompaniment.
Winning compositions will be published in the Berkshire Organbook,
distributed to all participants in AGO Region I Convention 1997. As many
of the works as possible will be performed during the convention.
Composers are encouraged to enter all three contests, but should submit
only one entry for each.
All entrants must submit three copies of each work. Please provide a
self-addressed envelope with sufficient postage if return of copies is
desired.
Entries must be received by August 31, 1996. Send to: Edwin I. Lawrence,
