(Apologies if this is not the right newsgroup for this sort of question)

I've become obsessed with obtaining a copy of the song "Wheel of
Fortune" but I need to know who sang it to even start looking.

The words go something like "The wheel is spinning, spinning, spinning,
I won't dream of winning, your love's sweet *something*, The wheel is
turning, turning, turning, I *something something* burning... "

Any help greatly appreciated.

Gus.

"Wheel Of Fortune" was one of the big song hits of 1952.

The original version by the Eddie Wilcox band (vocal by Sunny Gale) on the
Derby label is hard to find, but the cover version by Kay Starr ended up the #3
record of the year here in the states. She was a very popular singer for many
years, and that was her signature tune, still identified strongly with her.
That version has been reissued from time to time (it's on her 1991 "Kay Starr:
Collectors Series" on Capitol CDP 7 94080 2). She re-recorded it in the 60s
(also for Capitol) in a stereo (and IMHO inferior) version.

There was also a cover version by a Baltimore R&B group, the Cardinals, which
was moderately popular on the Black music charts at the time.

Good luck.

........and a good place to go for questions about 50s music (assuming you know
that it's from the 50s) is the <rec.music.rock-pop-r+b.1950s> newsgroup.

Re: Wheel of Fortune
Kay Starr had the big hit of the song in 1952. (ten weeks at
number one!!!). A great song. It should be on her Greatest Hits
which I'm sure is still on cassette and CD as well. js

Hey Gus,
a few people. Big Hit Record was Kay Starr on Decca. I probably have a
copy. Original was put out by J.P. Morgan. It started to hit and Decca
covered it. I was there!

According to AL LEVY at <jazz...@ix.netcom.com> who didn't notice that this
has been answered several times already:

> Big Hit Record was Kay Starr on Decca.

And weren't THEY upset when it was issued on Capitol!

> Original was put out by J.P. Morgan.

J. P. Morgan was the rich guy. Jaye P. Morgan was the girl singer who did
not have the original "Wheel of Fortune."

> It started to hit and Decca [sic] covered it. I was there!

Yep, Usenet sure is entertaining. And anyone can play just by making something
up.
