Wow. I'd LOVE to hear that! Think you can post it on
alt.binaries.music.classical (and/or mp3s.classical)??
But I have the recent complete Spartacus Capriccio), and it's certainly
shorter than that -- does this add alternates or something?

Would be nice. I'd especially want to hear the Violin Concert-Rhapsody
which to my knowledge is only available on a Russian Disk CD...
Not to mention more of the film music, and the complete Masquerade
(unless all he wrote was the 'suite'? I was never clear on that....)

"An ideal is not responsible for those who profess to believe in it".
Khatchaturian was not responsible for the identity of those who liked
his music - more relevant (if politics have any place at all in music)
might be Khatchaturian's opinion of Stalin!
OOps....that should be alt.binaries.SOUNDS.music.classical/mp3.classical

You're missing Rampal's transcription of the violin concerto for flute.
Authorised by the composer.

Galway also did one, and it's a bit different (for instance, the first
entrence is an octive higher). I believe he recorded it after
Khachaturian died...I like it though.
There's another 'flute concerto' recording, coupled with a transcription
of the Barber, available at Berkshire, but I have no idea about the
details of that one.

I understand your feelings. It is probably like never singing
Gesualdo because he was a brutal murderer or never playing Debussy
because he had a large collection of pornography or Schubert or Delius
because both died from sexually transmitted diseases or Wagner because
he was the con man of all time or Copland or Barber because they were
homosexuals (stoopers or stabbers?)
And Richard Strauss wrote a part for ME f*****g his WIFE. I guess I
should refuse to play it?
I don't know any "proper" composers. I only know composers.
Kind regards,

Ah yes, I avoided getting that disc when I found out that he needlessly
crammed his own arrangement of the Sabre Dance on it. Galway is a good
player, but he sometimes has poor taste in material.
Oddly enough, I see the phrase "even before I knew ..." in Archer's post.
Doesn't that mean the opposite of what you are making him (or her) out
to be saying?

What I'D like is a CD version of the four Spartacus suites conducted
by Zhuraitis (including some music not heard in the performing version
of the ballet). Right now I only have it on 4 LPs.
P.S. I met Khachaturian when he visited the U.S.; the Armenian
community in Washington threw a big banquet for him and prominent
Armenian-Americans attended (except Saroyan).

With a good newsreader (I recommend Xnews, although many others prefer Agent)
and a good ISP.

That's silly: you lose the effect whe the theme goes up an octave later.
> He does the same in the second movement, what a pity!
Right. Surely he can afford a flute with a low B foot.
Perhaps he considered that many flute players who may want to learn it
WON'T have the extra key?

When you're recording a piece, do you really care about other people
wanting to learn it?
Really, both low theme entries in the Rampal recording are a beautiful
effect. I can't imagine transposing it up.
But it's a transcription...

Mister Breathy? That's hard to believe.
He made the transcription, I imagine he would want to record it that
way.

What about abelian groups?
I believe Masquerade is a play (incidental music), not a ballet.
Anyway, I asked this before, but got no answer...

I don't know that much of his writing but his incidental music to King
Lear is (I think) excellent. I am currently engaged from June on
recording a great deal of his incidental music so I suppose I will get
to know more of it. We kick off with his film score "The Battle of
Stalingrad" followed by his film score "Othello". We are also
scheduled to record his score for the film "Admiral Ushakov" and also
the film "Secret Mission". I don't know anything about any of them
but I guess I will learn.
In September, I am scheduled to record "The Valencian Widow",
"Zangezur" and "Vladimir Ilyich Lenin" none of which mean anything to
me either...but I'm sure they will. Hopefully, he wrote it all out
anyway.
